I moved away from alphabetical because if I'm deciding what to watch I'll know what type of genre I'm in the mood for. Summertime, I like blockbusters that I saw in the theatre which spans 90's - early 2000's for me. I like this approach because I can pick a movie in minutes. When I had it alphabetically sometimes it would take me so long I didn't feel like watching a movie anymore lol.
Oh that's interesting.
Thanks for sharing.

All of my movies are in production date order. Where it gets tricky is when, they are a series (i.e. Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, etc), then those go in production date order of the original movie. Collection type movies (i.e. The Tim Burton Collection, Universal Monster Collection), I place those according to the release date of the physical media.

My collection is stored by genre inside a video cabinet. Will be investing in a second video cabinet due to the growth of my collection.

To post pics, you could use a picture hosting site and copy the image link.

Or, use Tapatalk. It's super easy. Just click and add whatever pic you want

Mine is entirely alphabetical with numbers being before the A section. In the event of a franchise I put Planet of the Apes in P and then all the sequels right after it, rather than putting Beneath in B and Escape in E etc., it's just easier to have them all together.

Sometimes it is hard to decide. Like The Hindenburg had it in disaster later chose to move it to historical. Drama and thillers cross over a lot to.

I have mine by genre but I separate my anime/Disney toons/pixar/every other animated film. I don't know why I do this but it's just what I do. I don't find it too hard to separate things actually even though some things may be thriller horror, I'll put it with what I feel it is more in line with. Since dusk till dawn was mentioned, I have that in horror. Shaun of the dead is in comedy as is zombie land.

I put those in horror along with Warm Bodies. They can easily fit into both.

I have individual sections for Ultra HD, Criterion, Masters of Cinema, Arrow Disney, Pixar, Animation, TV. The rest are all alphabetical. I also have 2 flight cases for DVDs that I haven't upgraded to Blu

Unfortunately Mrs mcvitie's films have to live with mine. haha

Masters of Cinema, Arrow, Ultra HD, Criterion

Pixar, Disney, Animated

A-M

N-Z

TV

Movies, Documentaries and Stand-Up DVD that I don't have on Blu-ray are in here. TV shows on DVD are still in their boxes

My collection is about half BD and half DVD, with half of those DVDs being older anime releases. As such, I organize my collection like this:
  • Blu-rays from A-Z (290 SKUs)
  • Anime DVDs from A-Z (185 SKUs)
  • All other DVDs from A-Z (172 SKUs)
  • LaserDiscs from A-Z (40 SKUs)
  • VHS tapes from A-Z (21 SKUs)
I really don't have enough anime Blu-rays (35 SKUs) to justify splitting them off of the main BD shelf, and they would look awkward lumped in with their DVD counterparts.

Numerical at the front. Like 976 evil and 48 hours.

Then alphabetical after that and disregarding movie that start with "a" or "the.

Then at the end I do collections of movies that aren't from a series. Like the blu ray collection of " race the devil and dirty Mary crazy larry."

I keep my Criterions separate from the normal movies. Shows them off too.

I've been thinking about using DVD cases with genres on the spines to separate my collection.

My newest shelf/cabinet doesn't sit perfect level so I have to use VHS tapes or something heavy to keep the Blus from toppling over when organizing.

How do you guys handle titles that start with numerals? Do you:
  • Treat the digit as spelled out using words (e.g. About Schmidt before 101 Dalmatians before 28 Days Later)
  • Smallest to largest initial digit, alphabetical style (e.g. 101 Dalmatians before 28 Days Later before About Schmidt)
  • Smallest to largest complete number (e.g. 28 Days Later before 101 Dalmatians before About Schmidt)
I go with the latter, but it's a pain in the butt to alphabetize them in my Excel list. What I have to end up doing is making a separate sorting column with enough preceding zeroes to make them line up the way I want them to.

I treat the number movies as if the numbers were spelled out. 28 Days Later is under Twenty, for example. My wife once said this was "weird."

I'd say Horror, Drama, Drama. I know Get Out is not horror, it's a psychological thriller, but it would fit nicely in a horror section, I think

right now, I have Drive and Nighcrawler on my 'favorites' shelf, but I'll put them on drama once I re-organize. I'll do away with 'favorites'

As do I. Everything is alphabetical by title within a specific format. I would never find things if I did it any other way.

I only organize my collection by 3D, 4K, anime and Arrow/BU/Synapse titles. Everything else is just randomly put on the shelf and nothing is alphabetical.

I ran out of shelf space lately so a lot of movies are laying on the floor stacked in rows too, and these are 3D, 4K and regular Blu-rays. A bit messy, need to sort this out sometime.

All this is probably the reason why I can easily spend about 30 minutes in front of my collection when picking out a movie to watch.
