From the start the budget was my main concern for this movie. Been reading the books since I was a lad back in the 70's but I wonder just how popular this franchise is outside the Francophone world? I feel it's a very high budget for such an unknown franchise. I myself cannot wait to see. All the pictures and trailers I've seen, seem to me like Besson really got the style and look of the books perfectly

^^^ For sure, growing up here in the states and someone who collected/read comic books back in the early to mid 80's I had never heard of Valerian. I recently sat down and read Bad Dreams and The City of Shifting Waters and I really enjoyed them. These would have been right up my alley at the time because I was a huge Star Wars fan. I really wish I had known about these back then.

The guy who wrote that also didn't like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, The Nice Guys, Finding Dory, The Big Short, or Spotlight. But he did like The Legend of Tarzan and London Has Fallen. I don't think his tastes line up with mine.

The tomatometer score isn't up yet but there are 7 fresh and two rotten reviews. This guy was one of the two rotten.

More importantly, he didn't like The Fifth Element.

I really hope this movie does well at the box office. Sadly it comes out the same day as Dunkirk.

It's not going to do well, but it has nothing to do with being up against Dunkirk. Just nobody (general public) cares about this. Might be good, might not, but it won't make $$. Feels a lot like a John Carter situation.

STX is aware since in Times Square, there were HUGE posters and billboards of the film with ads on cable.

72% on rotten tomatoes right now. 13 fresh, 5 rotten, average score 6.1/10

I thought good reviews would help the box office out, but I only see those scores going down as we get closer to release date.

Oh well, Ghost in the Shell had bad reviews and I absolutely love it. Maybe it will make enough money elsewhere to justify a sequel. I just can't imagine not liking it based on what I've seen so far and who made it.

Reading the reviews it certainly is. Different sources are both praising and criticizing the exact same aspects.

Here is part of one review I really liked:

Put in this way. Valerian won’t be for everyone, just like Besson’s earlier film The Fifth Element wasn’t for everyone. Like that movie, I think this will grow on people with time, but this isn’t The Martian or other more populous science fiction meant for mass audiences, but more for discerning moviegoers with strange taste and sensibilities.

I can't wait for it, it looks fantastic. Sci fi can be a hard sell, especially something as batshit crazy and colourful as this. Obviously the movie isn't a jokefest like Guardians of the Galaxy so the trailers can't market humour to appeal to those who don't like sci fi.

I think it also doesn't help that the trailers haven't really given a great idea of the plot. They all seem to hinge on "hey look how crazy colourful this sci fi is, come see it!" which is great for people like us who lap this stuff up but not so great for those ambivalent towards sci fi.

I was able to get screening passes for Valerian on the 19th @7:30pm but just now I got screening passes for Atomic Blonde on the 19th @ 7:00pm. (Thanks Tony208 for the links to sign up!)

I'm thinking I will go see Atomic Blonde on the 19th and just buy tickets to Valerian on the 20th. When I see Valerian for the first time I want it to be on the best screen and I want the best reserved seats. I have no idea how they will be showing this screening (3D? IMAX? RealD? Dolby? tiny 2d screen with us crammed in the corner?).

My stupid local theater only has one IMAX screen and they will only be showing Dunkirk on it, so no big screen Valerian for me I guess.
