Thanks my man.

I'll give you a timestamp to check at the start of chapter 10, from 24:12 - 24:26 the banding in the evening sky looks noticeable. But again that 's just on the OLED C6, I'll have a look at it later on a different panel.

Like I just wrote in my little mini-review, the banding is absolutely there. You're not alone.

That's as may be but certain processing can still make such things worse. And if the Smooth Gradation on the Sony telly can smooth it out, so much the better. (I did a load of checking on that fade to black near the start of Relevant to see if the Sony or Panny player handled it better (Sony wins) but forgot to check out the Smoove Grandiation on teh teevee. D'oh!)

My LG UHD LCD set is an 8-bit panel that uses dithering to claim 10-bit, so I'm sure the banding will be very obvious on my set.

I wouldn't say it's really obvious banding either way. The ship in fog scene is where it was most obvious, but it was still relatively subtle. I know you're more sensitive to banding than the average though.

Shame the fog scene is affected. It's a gorgeous scene. Annoying when it doesn't even happen on the blu-ray.

I'm returning my copy since I'm sure its the mastering that is the problem (maybe a Canadian problem). Can anybody who is impressed with their copy include the selection number. Its underneath the Universal logo on the spine.

Had a chance to check this on a sony 930e and 850c. Previously mentioned seeing 'a little bit of banding' on the OLED LG C6 but compared to the LCDs, it is a lot. The banding, from the skies to the fog, on the LCDs are greatly reduced if not eliminated altogether. Looks a lot more clean compared to the LG.

In spite of the OLED's richer blacks on display, I enjoy how it looks more band free on LCD and that is where I'll be watching the UHD in full sometime this weekend.

My E6 also shows some banding at the start of Revenant and Terminator Genesis. Will need to test this one once it's released here. Oddly the Panny 10 bit update resolved most issues with banding on HD blu-ray but not much if anything on UHD.

I think if it shows in stock in your local store on the walmart app if you go to a best buy store they should price match. Not best buy.com though.

Picked one up at WM today, they had 5 or 6 on the shelf in that regard.

For someone who has seen the BD over 100x this is pretty much a night and day transfer. I know exactly how the BD looks like and the UHD excels it in pretty every way, major step up in clarity and definition. Universal really did it justice. Oh, and the banding isn't much of a distraction since its almost masked by the fog.

PQ = 4.5/5

Universal really aren't shy about using HDR on older titles. With Sony, Warner and others the older films use it very subtly, but with the Mummy trilogy and now this Universal are cranking up the HDR dial, which (accurate or not) makes for lovely images. This sucker pop pop pops and looks divine. Contrast can look hot but if you compare it to the BD that's just the look of the movie in those scenes, the HDR is just making it brighter. It's also surprisingly much sharper than the BD in comparison.

That all said there's a couple issues. For one I saw banding where there is none on the BD, mostly when the ship is navigating the fog and some other nighttime sky shots. Also the bump in res makes some CGI backgrounds look worse, and Kong's face can look a little too crisp sometimes if that makes sense. Other CG shots are helped by the HDR though, so it's a mixed bag.

In any event, buy this disc if you like the movie. Looks great.
great review how about the DTS:X kicking you back there? better than BD one? thanks

I use headphones nowadays and was never an audiophile, that's why I keep my comments focused on video.

If you mean catalog release then maybe, but those Mummy movies looked pretty great, especially the first one. If you mean overall then nah, not with stuff like Lucy out there.

Posting this here since its the inside of the King Kong 4k case.
My case is the exact same way. Definitely a manufacture thing.
