May just be me, but again I wouldn't go 7.1 with that layout. You'd have to put speakers on stands behind which would possibly impede walking through, or you would have to ceiling mount them since you're not close to the walls.

However, I would say that going with the 50's and a different center is a viable upgrade. It's what I did, and I still am using the same sub- I haven't upgraded it yet. Using the Rm6750's as surrounds does a pretty good job. The sub will also do the trick and you can always upgrade it later if you want.

*edit* The CS1 or CS2 from Polk would be properly timbre-matched for the 50's.
