Yeah that's what we're trying to get him to do. Have him get a UHD PC drive & then figure out it won't work with certain boards & cpu's & then get people & manufactures attention.

About Asus Z170 boards:
Deluxe and premium are listed as confirmed to be compatible, what about: Asus Z170-A, Z170 PRO and Z170 PRO Gaming? Aren't they tested or are they confirmed not to be compatible? Should the Chipset SGX/HDMI 2.0 specs be the same as Deluxe and premium or there's any different specification which doesn't allow the playback of UHD Blu-rays? Thanks in advance |

These 3 boards have HDMI 1.4. only If you are thinking about a new board, buy a Z270 or wait for a Z370. UHD BD playback on some Z170 boards is possible, but it is not recommended by CyberLink or Pioneer. Also no HDR. ASUS mobos are the worst choice in general.

Hopefully PowerDVD 18 Ultra next year might support Dolby Vision HDR. This year desktop computer owners are forced to use HDR10 only. With a standalone OPPO UDP-203 for $549 its a lot cheaper then a desktop computer and one can play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs right now with Dolby Vision HDR.

Other Z270s should be HDR compatible too, because the chipset allows it. Unfortunately most people here do not have HDR monitors yet (neither do I) and thus there is no way to test HDR on other motherboards. If you dig in this thread, you may find a post about ASRock Z270 Gaming ITX and HDR. My Aorus Gaming 8 is a cheaper variant of Gaming 9 and the slight differences have nothing to do with audio/video part of the motherboard, only with the gaming/OC features. These three are recommended by CyberLink and Pioneer from the beginning, this should be enough. Next there is Supermicro C7Z270-CG. Steiger Dynamics company builds and sells 4k HDR capable HTPCs based on this motherboard. Its more expensive sibling C7Z270-PG can do anything C7Z270-CG can, I am sure. I do not like ASUS mainly because its cocky behavior. What do you think about a company which declares itself to be the best brand on the world while other more humble companies are offering better products? In this particular case, ASUS is not a good choice because Z170/270 BIOS allows for Intel SGX item Disable or Software controlled options only, there is no Enabled option. This may cause further troubles with UHD BD playback. ASRock and Gigabyte BIOSes have all three options. Last edited by triffid; 07-28-2017 at 12:53 AM. |

Hi just setup an Asrock Z170 mini itx board with an I5 7500 CPU and it is connected to a Sony 4k TV and it is operating in HDR mode with Powerdvd unlike what the Asrock site was saying that HDR it is not supported ON 100 series. As comparison I have been trying to setup a Asus Z170 Deluxe and Powerdvd warns (when it works) that HDR is not supported so you must switch to SDR.

Interesting!
So you mean with same chipset Asrock works with PowerDVD in HDR while ASUS doesn't? |

It seems so I am using the same model CPU in both motherboards but I can not get the Asus board to work properly but it has prompted me to use SDR just like my Samsung UHD Bluray player when I used it on my Hisense 4k tv which does not support HDR(it could but the nice people at Hisense Australia have no interest in releasing the firmware).

But something has changed like you write. The only thing I've noticed lately is that Cyberlink did release a updated version of PowerDVD some time ago. I downloaded it but never tested it. But now that I have tested it seems this version has changed the behavior. I have just tested briefly on the Panasonic TV and like you write HDR is now showing a picture. This was not the case before. I'm not sure how well it works though... I can only get it to show HDR at 60Hz (auto refresh rate change in PowerDVD never kicks in). If I set the display to 24Hz PowerDVD switches back to 60Hz. Colors are extremely washed out so I'm almost certain this is not BT.2020. And there are a lot of gradient artifacts so probably 8-bit. I need to test a bit more later today and will also see if works on the Samsung TV. I guess it's step in the right direction though. And to be honest some of the problems I've seen could be linked to crappy Intel HD Graphics drivers rather the PowerDVD. |

For both my boards I am using the latest drivers from each boards website. At the moment my Asus z170 deluxe is crashing when I run the cyberlink adviser so I guess a fresh install is required and start over. With the asrock z170 Fatal1ty I am using the NUC INTEL ME driver advised earlier in this thread.

So if I picked up one of these new Dell XPS desktops -
http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/produ...fdcwvmxopt411s and installed the Pioneer UHD Blu-ray player with Powerdvd, would I be able to watch 4K UHD blu-rays on my desktop? Thanks. |
