I have a feeling that some of these wont be must-haves.
Could not disagree more. Sony's 4K transfers of pre-DI 35mm films have been far and away the best-looking UHD discs available so far, IMO.

That's exaggerated. They make good film based UHD discs but DI based material from film or digital cameras can look just as good. Just different if it's not from film. And if it is from film and 4K DI it's like Sony discs. 2K film based material can look fantastic too.

I have a gift for you guys:

I got the ProRes 1080p version of the new trailer, so I upscaled it to 4K in very high quality...

2160p, SDR BT.709, AVC 61.2 mbps, PCM stereo 24 bit

Enjoy!!

The point isn't a film vs. digital debate, it's that those 4k scans of 35mm classics look stunning and much better than the normal blus.

I trust Sony more than any other studio in the business when it comes to home video quality on any format since DVD.

And I know they won't push HDR to change the intended look of the movie, they will use it wisely...

On the other hand I would never buy a catalog title from Universal without checking reviews and opinions.

Hmm. Yeah, the "listen to me, will ya" line IS gone on my SE version. I'm shocked I never noticed it wasn't there, I know that line like the back of my hand.

I've only watched two "full film no DI" movies on UHD BD so far, Independence Day, which looks fantastic, and Léon The Professional from Sony that has great picture quality, they did a hell of a good job with it.
I only whish they'll do such a good job with Gattaca qhen Sony releases it.

My first post.......

I have been on a multi-day mission to find out everything I can about this new release.

For anyone wondering, the version of the film used for this new release is Spielberg’s "director’s cut".

Amazon has three offerings:

"Close Encounters Of The Third Kind 3 Discs Gift Set 4K".

Based on the magnified images of the "Gift Set", You get:
"Special collectible 4K Ultra HD gift set lights up and plays the iconic 5-tone theme! Also includes a 64-page booklet with rare photos from the film's production!"

So, for $75.99, you get the 4K disc, the Blu Ray disk, the "Special Features" disc, plus the Ultraviolet rights, in addition to all the frills of the "Gift Set".

The "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind 3 Discs 4K" is $39.99. I am guessing this version includes the 4k disc, the Blu-Ray disc, and the "Special Features: disc, plus the Ultraviolet rights.

The "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind Anniversary Edition 2 Discs" version for $19.99, must then contain the Blu-Ray disc of the movie and the "Special Features" disc, plus the Ultraviolet rights.

The less expensive versions describe either 3 discs or 2 discs, so I am assuming the "Special Features" disk is included as one of the discs, just like in the most expensive "Gift Set". This info should be made more clear on amazon, through images, or written descriptions. The only really CLEAR descriptions came by way of the images for the "Gift Set".

I did put in a call to Sony Home Entertainment today, and actually got a very nice person, who promised to find out exactly what is included in each priced offering (in other words, if the "Special Features" disc is included for each offering). I also asked him if he could try to find out a list of cities with Theaters that will be showing the new theatrical release in September. He promised to try to find out all of this info, and will email me next week.

Even though this is one of my top 5 favorite movies, I will wait a while before ordering. I don't even have a Blu-ray player, and can't find one I can afford that has decent reviews. I will probably buy the Blu-ray version only, just to get the Ultraviolet rights, and then set up an account at Ultraviolet so I can stream the movie to my TV. I don't have a 4K TV, either, just a fairly new 43" 1080p HD TV. It is my FIRST HD TV, so coming from a 27" tube TV a year ago, it's a whole new world. It was a gift, and so I doubt seriously that I will ever get a 4K TV.

Sorry so long. Hope all this helps someone......

There will be full details in a press release eventually, I'm sure.

StingingVelvet:

Well, yeah, I suppose you are correct!

However, it is almost August, and I, for one, would sure like to know how far I am going to have to travel in order to see it in a theater, and how and when will I be able to get tickets!

I meant about the disc, but yeah it always bugs me when events don't put that info out earlier. My wife is a night nurse and plans her schedule months in advance, so it feels like we're always trying to get her days off traded at the last minute to go to events.

I'm not saying it can't. Just saying I, personally, have found Sony's UHD transfers of older 35mm movies to look the best of anything I've seen on the format so far. Obviously there are lots of great 4K transfers out there - I just think these are the greatest!

Gattaca? Do you know something we don't? Because the Gattaca thread on this board thinks its iffy if this even gets any kind of remaster, much less a 4K release.

You have a point. It was a difficult situation for both of them. Neither of them handled it ideally of course. As you said, she was willing to talk the next morning, and he started off seemingly ok, but then went nuts and started running around the yard tearing everything up. I can see how she wouldn't know at that point what to do.

Is the theatrical re-release supposed to be the original cut or the special Spielberg edition?

I've only known Sony/Columbia to release the Director's Cut

How close to release are they planning to give us a full press release? I'd love this, but only if it has all the cuts of the film. I have a sinking feeling that it won't for some reason.
