LOL. White flashing is what I would have with the UB900 coming out of HDR stuff, or on first boot. It would stop usually.

With the X800, Id get a long delayed black screen when going back to home with a disc, not a big deal though. It works like butter with the X940E, which it should I guess...

I didn't receive any notification from them. I could see that FedEx delivered it though with the tracking number. The only email I got from them was one saying that my new player was on the way.

Edit: It arrived today and I already have it hooked up.

Mine arrived today too. I never got an email after the very first one telling me what to do. Weird. Oh well, happy I got it so fast obviously.

I know you didnt ask me but... excepting DV it seemed the best reviewed and the consensus for the best player at the best price. Every other player the same negatives kept coming up.

I actually got the Sony because it was the cheapest one that let you turn off HDR. I ended up getting a new TV and not needing that anyway, but it's still a very solid player for the price. Assuming the new one lasts anyway!

What do you mean 'turn off HDR'? Are you referring to capability of playing 4K HDR titles on a 4K non-HDR tv or projector?

I sincerely hope it works out well for you. I haven't really had any issues with my player since I received it... I think late February? Besides the Fox Blu-ray playback debacle, that is.

Thus far, it's really proven to be a top notch device. I had one minor freeze-up in the middle of a single 4K disc the entire time, one which thankfully couldnt be replicated.

Good luck!

Default Comparing 1080P blu ray to 4K UHD

I have been doing some A/B comparisons between blu rays played on my PS3 Slim, and 4K UHD blu rays played on my Sony UBP X800. Honestly, in most cases I think the 1080P blu ray looks better. The image is brighter and shows more detail. The Magnificent 7 is a prime example. The Shallows looked great on both, and the difference in the two were barely noticeable. Sausage Party was slightly brighter on blu ray, while appearing to be a tad sharper. Once again, the picture quality between the two were very similar. I did these comparisons sitting approximately 4 ft. from the screen. From a normal viewing distance of 12 to 14 ft. I doubt that I could notice any difference in image quality, besides the brightness differential. I should note that I did these comparisons on a 65 inch LG B6 OLED. I'm going to do some more comparing via The Revenant and Life when I have more time. So far the 4K UHD experience has been kind of disappointing, and besides Planet Earth II (which I have not compared to 1080p) I would not consider much of an upgrade. Certainly not for the inflated price tag of players and titles in comparison to blu ray.

Which do you think has the better 4k upscaler, the LG or the X800?

I think upscaling is always best be left up to the tv than the player

I prefer the player when it comes to 4K upscaling because the roll off in chroma resolution isn't as pronounced, it probably doesn't matter in real world viewing as opposed to test patterns but I leave it to the player nonetheless and the Sony is EXCELLENT, it's better than the Panny UB900 for DVD playback too.

That's a good question. I'll have to get back to you on that. I think everything has looked great, regardless of player or format. I'm just not seeing a considerable difference in picture quality between the blu ray and UHD formats. Text during credits look sharper, but I feel that the overall detail is lost at times, possibly due to HDR? It's almost like they tried to capitalize on the infinite contrast ratio of OLED and made things too dark, resulting in a slightly murky picture when compared to it's blu ray counter part. That wasn't the case with the Shallows though, so I don't want to make a broad generalization until I see more content. Has anybody else found this to be the case when comparing the two formats?

So you set player's resolution on Auto for blurays and DVDs?

The Samsung UHD player did not let you turn HDR off. My old TV had HDR but it was a weak version of it, so I wanted to try SDR conversion. The Samsung player did not let me, so I got the Sony which did. I ended up just getting a new TV anyway though.

If you think blu-ray looks better in general there's definitely something wrong with your settings. The way you keep saying blu-ray is brighter makes me think maybe you use a super high backlight setting and HDR's more normal brightness looks dim to you? Lots of people had that issue early on.

I had that same problem until someone online told me to turn the Picture/Display setting on my TV from Full to Auto. After I did that, everything changed drastically and the PQ with the HDR was absolutely amazing!!

Thanks! I'll look into that. When I first used the player it boosted every setting up too high for my taste. It was like torch mode compared to my usual settings. I reset it to my normal settings. Standard; Backlight 57, Contrast 80, Brightness 52.

My new Samsung T.V. set defaults Backlighting to 10 (the maximum) and contrast to 100 (also the maximum setting) when displaying HDR material. As my Samsung set (which is coupled with Sony's UBP X-800) is an edge lit display and I watch my movies on a fully dark room, would you change those settings but trying to keep HDR's highlites as much as possible?
