Usually I would agree, but if it's just a bigger box and photo book I find that very meh for $20 extra. I even like the normal version's cover more, unlike E.T. I'm conflicted, have bother ordered for now.

We (family) purchased 3 reserved tickets, right in the sweet spot, dead center with the screen. 2 rows back from the middle seats. I told my wife I get to be a kid again for a couple of hours. ![]() First time I watched Close Encounters I was stuck in the very back row. It was the only seats left. Went with a neighbor kid, I remember they almost didn't let us in because we we're kids. About 4 more people behind us got in, and they said sorry folks we're sold out. There was a long line of people still waiting to get in. Ah great memories! No back row this time ![]() |

I was there with you 100%. I did wind up buying the box version of E.T., but only because it was $29.99. And to be totally honest, I have all of the music (on multiple releases), so the CD (remastered or no) wasn't really even the thing for me. But a nice box, the book, the CD, AND *cover art I actually liked*, well, to me...those all added up to $6 of value.

I'm keeping the Blu-ray book version I first purchased way back in 07 (wow its been 10 years already) so this will be added on. I love this film and it just gets better with each viewing and I finally got my wife to re-watch it again. Maybe I can convince her to go to the theater to see it again...

Can someone help me with an explanation. There's a scene in Close Encounters that has always bugged me because I am not sure I fully understand it.
It's the scene in the auditorium immediately following the music discovery in India. If memory serves the scene opens with them playing the series of notes heard in India. Lacombe then takes the stand and begins to explain the musical technique of using hand signals for teaching deaf children. During this the notes from the sequence are played with a corresponding hand signal. The sequence is then played again all at once and then suddenly another sequence of notes is played. This is the sequence that is played from then on and that has become so very famous. It's played as if a clue has been solved and then everyone applauds. Now I have never quite understood how they arrive at this final series of notes based upon what they start off with in this scene. Can anyone shed any light? |

Thinking about it now I wonder if the two sets of five notes actually don't mean the same thing at all. The first set, from India, may have put the scientists on the right track to use the sign language and, using it, the set we all know is a different set of notes, based upon the sign language to say something else. Maybe hello? Or stop kidnapping our people you b*****ds?!

They're not different from each other. They even play a transitional run where the Indian vocals become the five tones. I think the problem may come in the playback of the Indian vocals, which sound like they begin with the fourth tone; in other words, if the familiar tone sequence is 1-2-3-4-5, then the editing of the Indian vocals sounds like 4-5-1-2-3.

I agree and always have. That said, this is still the third best motion picture ever set to celluloid!
