Quite possible those sounds were in there already but buried by other sounds.

Just slight changes in positioning and amplitude can make sounds appear to be added, but were in fact there all along.

I don't think so. Like I said, I've watched that opening countless times. Those are brand new sounds when the stacks belch fire. A-B the thing if you need to, but they sound far too different to be attributed to positioning.

I'm curious to check out the VUDU UHD copy to see if it has the same mix as the UHD disc. It says Dolby Atmos on VUDU, but I'll check it out tonight to confirm.

Not to stay off-topic, but in the public interest:

If cashback on Amazon purchases is your goal and you are a prime member, the Amazon Store Card is MUCH better than the above, as it offers either 5% cashback (as a statement credit) on ALL Amazon purchases, or 0% financing for 6 months ($149 or more in a single purchase transaction) or 12 months ($599 or more on a single purchase transaction).

You can pick which benefit you want (cashback or financing) every time you check out; it's not an all-or-nothing proposition.

It's an instant 5% off.

Granted, it can only be used on Amazon not anywhere else like the Amazon Visa, but I have other cards for general purchases. The store card for Amazon purchases is the bee's knees, IMO.

There apparently is also an "Amazon Prime Rewards Visa" card different from what OP posted that offers the same 5% cashback, and can be used everywhere, but not the 0% financing.

Comparison of the two cards:

https://www.amazon.com/Credit-Cards/...ode=1266766011

I have both cards, but use the Amazon Store card almost exclusively.

The scale model shots...

I have to agree with everyone and really hope restorations of other classics can live up to this one. Probably my favourite release yet.

I see Amazon is out. Did they have some initially? If so, what were they selling it for (now $33)?

Pre-order dropped to ~$27, but tax made it $30.

Thanks. Any other retails have it for under 30 with fast shipping?

Lossy compression depends on the fact that louder sounds drown out other sounds in the same channel and the compressor will drop those low sounds out to save bits - not allocating data to stuff that can't be heard. If they change position they can now be heard.

Was gonna suggest Bullmoose (they have it for ~$28) but they moved it to in-store only for now, no online orders. I'm not aware of the situation in any other stores sadly.

This is true. Then again, not every film is going to receive the same restoration received by Blade Runner, so our wallets should be somewhat safe.

It's annoying that the movie looks so good, but sounds so different from what I've watched all these years.
While it's highly unlikely that there new sound effects, your impression is perfectly understandable. The new Atmos mix does provide a very different, and to my ears, superior impression, than previous releases. The analogy I would use it to listen to the same True HD 5.1 mix on two different AVRs, but only one has the ability to decode True HD.

I never felt it was improperly mixed, more that what was being said at that moment was irrelevant to the diegetic sound from the surrounding area. It may be slight revisionism but, along with the visuals, created an immersive and exhilarating experience.
This.

What are you listening on? Someone earlier in the thread mentioned how the sound effects drowned out the score when they were listening in stereo, it doesn't appear to downmix all that well.
And this.

More of this.

If your TV and AVR support Dolby Digital Plus (DD+)/Atmos over HDMI ARC, you will get the same mix, but it will be the lossy Atmos track, not the lossless track on the UHD disc. The net is that it will not sound the same, and sounds which are prominent on the disc will be diminished or even absent. I've listened to both, and increasing the volume for the Vudu lossy track doesn't move the needle in comparison to the UHD disc Atmos track.

It's that good.

You can always rent it first.

Just a note for those looking at the VUDU UHD. I trust that you realize that you did not download a UHD copy from the code. The "UHD available" icon on your screen is an invitation to spend more to actually get the UHD version -- until then, you only have a normal HD copy to stream. I have no idea of the HD is Dolby Vision or if you only get that with the UHD upgrade.

Eh?
.

Mine says I own UHD. The product description says "UHD now available," which I'm sure is there to let anyone who owns it in HD know that they can upgrade to UHD.

It dropped to $28+ a few weeks before release. With a 5% Prime Card discount and free shipping, good to go.

I just watched few scenes. What a GORGEOUS looking disc, and the grain... so organic, natural and beautiful.

My stores 3 copies finally showed up today. I immediately took one out to one of my best customers who had just asked about it (he gets nearly every 4K release).

The Blu-ray was very good for the technology at the time but the other night I watched the 4K version and then popped the Blu-ray to see what specials it had. I scanned through a few scenes and realized how much better the 4K is in almost every way. I'll be curious to see how Apollo 11 looks in 4K since the Anniversary Blu-ray was really outstanding.
