The first generation hardware chipset in the Sony must not be able to handle the processing power for Dolby Vision HDR. Dolby Vision HDR offers 12 bit with 68.7 billion colors, where as HDR10 is only 10 bit with 1.07 billion colors.
I may be mistaken, but I don't believe there any any consumer 4K tvs available that can display 68.7 billion colors at this time. Is this capability coming in 2018 4K tvs? Are 12 bit panel tvs coming soon?

Okay, I've given it a chance on several different 4K UHD movies and have decided, I just don't like HDR. It darkens, dulls, and washes out the picture too much. To my eyes, it looks much better with HDR turned off and watching it in regular 4K with HDR-SDR conversion. The picture is much more sharp and dynamic.

I hope you realize that this is not normal at all, especially given your TV, which should be capable of displaying HDR correctly. There's something seriously wrong with your panel.

Something wrong with your display or setup, period.

Have to agree with everyone else... HDR isn't always amazing, but if you say something like say, The Mummy, The Shallows or Planet Earth 2 is dull something is seriously wrong.

There are definitely some movies where the HDR version looks a bit darker/dimmer than the SDR version. Ghost in the Shell, Jupiter Ascending, 3:10 to Yuma, X-Men First Class, E.T. and Unforgiven maybe... this is not normal though, it's the exception.

Yes I know, which is the exact reason why this is so frustrating! I just don't know what the solution is.

Yes I know, but what? I have the player set to ycbcr(4:4:4) already but don't know what else to do. How do I set the TV to ycbcr(4:4:4) as well?

Is it better to have it set to ycbcr(4:4:4) versus Auto??

It depends on your T.V. set. I think there's an easy way to know what your set prefers. Set the HDMI to Auto and then change to (4:2:2) if there's a jump or short cut on video signal, this is not the prefered video signal by your T.V. set. If there is no jump or brief cut on video signal, that is the video format your set prefers. Double check by changing back to Auto, if you got your T.V. set prefered video format there should be no jump or brief cut as before. Try this with ALL video formats till you get to your set video format. My EU Samsung 49" HDR UHD set prefers (4:2:2) and that's how I have it set. I guess I don't need to know that both T.V. set and UHD BD player communicate with each other via HDMI handshake.
I hope this helps.

The 90s one. I have no desire to ever see the new one.

Thank you for the response. My Sony TV goes black for a second and then returns, on all of the settings. I've always had it on Auto, it was just worried that I wasn't getting the "best" picture if others are suggesting different settings.

How is the upscaling on this player? I'm currently using a BDP S380 so I'm wondering how much better regular BDs would look on the UBP X800.

It's gonna depend on the TV. Compared to my Samsung doing the upscaling itself I don't notice a real difference. Maybe ever so slightly more crisp. Other TV brands have worse upscaling though, like Vizio, so the X800 would likely look more obviously better.

Discovered a curious and mostly useless little quirk with this player: when it's set to 1080p with HDR on it will deliver a downscaled 1080p image complete with HDR. If I set the Panny to 1080p then it converts HDR to SDR as a matter of course.

I doubt there are many HDCP 2.2 enabled 1080p HDR sets out there, but you never know!

I see. I have the Samsung JS8500 so I would assume its upscaling coupled with that of the player itself should be pretty good, right?
