The problem with making a New Mutants movie is that Fox already did what it should have been with First Class. Yes it was different characters, but the story of it - the younger generation, learning their powers and banding together - was exactly what a New Mutants movie would have been.

So they had to do something different. And as they have seen Marvel (MCU) have success with giving each movie its own genre/approach (political thriller, heist flick, teen flick, etc), they wanted to do the same and picked horror.
Yes, there are NM storylines that definitely lend themselves to horror, but I think they needed to establish these characters first. Without the title, you wouldn't even know this was anything but another random supernatural horror film.

Just as a film, it looks decent and I will check it out, but unless the final film is more actual New Mutants, I will be disappointed.

It looks more like a TV series going by that trailer. Still interested though.

Its looks fine for what their doing. Its adding to the CBM genre.

Im concerened that w/ the Gifted, Legion, The New Mutants, and a rookie team in The Dark Phoenix, were getting the same shit.
Blueberry soda, pancakes, hot sauce, pie, etc.

Im sick of seeing teenagers all the ****in time.

I agree, but I think that's probably what they are going for. Think about it... Carrie, The Fury, Scanners, Firestarter... all horror movies that dealt with people with extraordinary powers that were difficult to control. Although, we all know this is related to the X-Men and obviously deals with mutants, I think Fox is holding the reveal of super powers close to the chest for now -- Hopefully that won't end up biting them in the ass, and maybe the criticism of people demanding to see the characters use their powers will push them to give us something more sooner rather than later with the next trailer, but for now they are trying to sell us on another angle that expands on the mutant concept.

I'm confused, though. Is Demon Bear the one causing all that terror in the trailer? Because we never see him (or it) in the trailer. And I don't know exactly what Demon Bear's powers are since he is not a mutant and all.

Think of Freddie Kruger in a Bear Suit.

Also I think the kids have been tormented by the staff.
Im getting Logan/Wolverine Origins mutant kids being messed w/ by scientists.
So some of the effects seem to be the kids lashing out or Danielle Moonstar/Psyche/ Mirage causing illusions.

Called it on the Nightmare on Elm Street 3 Dream Warriors vibe.

Also, the old Nightmare on Elm Street latex (or spandex) wall.

All I know is any NM film needs to have Magik with her armored arm, her sword, and Lockheed (and no, not just a stuffed animal). This looks to have none of those.

This looks too based in reality.

Illyana is the kid (w/ the stuffed Lockheed) here. Having a mystical sword and and the armored arm would take away from the vibe.

Illyana is also Ana Taylor Joy. The little kid shot must be a flashback.

I’m going to see this opening weekend! Thank you Fox for thinking outside the kiddie comedy box. This is what Doctor Strange should’ve been, but he’s too busy listening to his Beyoncé album.

You now how it is in Hollywood nowadays. Everything is meant to be a trilogy. At least.

I knew this was getting made but I really didn't follow it so I absolutely did not expect a horror movie for x-men. I mean, Deadpool and Logan still lend themselves to be comic action based, despite being great shakeups from their predecessors. Going full horror for this is a jump and I love what a jump it is. It almost seems like X-men meets Cure for Wellness (which is a film I loved). Right now there's only one question on my mind:
R or PG-13? This seems low budget, as most horror is (even the more higher budgeted horror films have a max budget of $50 million), so here's hoping it's another R rated X-men film.

Also, thumbs up for a great use of Pink Floyd's The Wall.
