For $25, the new BD is definitely worth it. Just sell the 4K disc and code if you don't want those and bring your cost down even further.

Minimal is the wrong word but I would agree Unforgiven's remaster was more subtle than others on the format like Starship Troopers. Then you add the semantics of how big an upgrade the UHD is to that and you've opened a whole other can of worms.

Unforgiven on UHD is definitely noticeable improved over the BD in detail and depth, but to what degree it might depend on who you ask.

It's no contest. Both are much better but the UHD really shines. HDR was handled with respect. I was reluctant to upgrade to 4K fearing my beloved films would be bastardized with HDR but it had the opposite affect. Brings us much closer, even on par with a theatrical experience.

To me it was spectacular to watch, but I'd never bought the title before. It's one of my favorites overall.

This, to me, is the most exciting thing about HDR: it allows movies to be shown digitally the way they were originally shown theatrically. The colors can now be much more accurate to the film print.

Yes, in terms of black levels, etc (and resolution for movies shot on 70mm but shown in 35mm). The color timing of the actual film should remain the same, though, with HDR allowing digital video to better represent the color timing of the film elements.

No, historically, sometimes the prints you viewed in a theater were just lousy, sub-par, treated poorly or over-used, dirty and scratched, run on equipment that wasn't maintained, and sometimes even bad in the can from the start (poorly produced print when new).

So, I rewatched this disc and spent some time comparing it to the remastered BD. To be honest, I am not overly enthused about either disc.

As far as detail, there is no doubt an increase with the UHD BD and a more natural rendition of film grain; in fact, I would say I am impressed with the detail of the disc. No issues there.

But there is something that subjectively feels "off" with both discs in terms of color. The remastered BD looks much too overly saturated and unnatural; it's as if the colors were just pumped up too much making skin tones look overly red at times and with the overall color in general throughout the movie. With that said, I like the gamma of the disc. With the UHD BD, the colors look more natural for sure - but they almost feel a little bit too "drained" in their look and the brightness in HDR looks a bit odd at times. You get some outdoor scenes where the sky is bright, but then the shades on objects and people look a little dark. Indoor scenes look fine though. As you continue to watch the UHD BD you kind of get used to it, but I don't think this disc's HDR and overall "look" is nearly as good as other UHD discs I have been watching. I don't believe this is how the movie originally looked either. Still, I think the UHD BD is the best version of the movie.

I agree with most of that. The new BD's colour is WAY too pumped up but the UHD goes just a touch too much the other way, looking a little bit more desaturated than was perhaps necessary. I don't think it looks too unbalanced with regards to the brightness though, nothing stood out as being overly odd to my eyes in terms of HDR.

I agree detail and HDR are great, color is the question. I thought it looked quite fine though, perhaps a little faded but it definitely beats the BD and the older BD. I remember paying a lot of attention to the end scene where Munny and the kid wait for the money. It looks SO much more like a coming storm at sunset to me, I was in awe of the visuals there.

Yeah, if that's the "we all got it coming" moment -- those shots look spectacular on the UHD.

I have the DigiBook version. Is the 4k worth the upgrade?

What I noticed about the UHD HDR version of the film was how much detail was preserved in the its many dark scenes. I never bought the BD but whenever I saw it on TV, the film's dark scenes were uniformly murky.

The darker scenes and interior shots look good. Maybe it's something with the desaturated color in those brighter scenes that makes it look different to me. I'm going to take a look again at some specific scenes.

Unforgiven has never "popped". It's always been a very dark, cold drab film.

I watched this last night too. It's the best I've ever seen the movie look. I thought it was a great upgrade.

Guys did anyone have stutter on the beginning of the movie where the women are talking about how much money they have. Playing the movie just now brand new out of the case with no visible scratches, there was a lot of stutter and frame skip for around 20-30 seconds. I can't tell if its the player or disc.
