That's why they make tilting mounts so you can tilt the tv to the direction of the eye. And the whole idea with mounting it is so it looks like a picture on the wall. It looks funny if it isn't up higher than eye level. Especially if there isn't a stand or something to offset it below. And like I said if it doesn't need to be higher than the stand why mount it? Unless there is something on the stand that has to go there (where the tv sits like a center channel..which btw we have put behind some tvs facing upwards and have sounded great! or a rcvr?? We actually zip tied a wii and a Direct TV rcvr to the back of a tv that was in a lunch room at a business and it worked great!!).

Best thing to do is take a big piece of cardboard like the box the tv comes in and cut out the shape of the tv and tape it to the wall. That way you can see what it looks like before you put it up. And like I say...these are generalities or averages. Everyones taste is different but you need some place to start.
