Mine started getting loud after the 1.8 update. I replaced it and the fan on the new one also goes into high speed within 5 minutes of playing a movie. I called Sony and they said an update would not cause this, but I don't know any other explanation.

I just got a PS3, updated to the last firmware update, and I found a problem with it. For some reason, it doesn't display all shades of black. I am using the PS3 HDMI out to the HDMI in on my reciever, and then that's connected via an HDMI to DVI cable. Any thoughts? Anyone else test this out?

Version 1.80-1.81 fixes BTB issues. But you need to enable them.

Alrighty, so I have 1.9 installed, but how do I enable the Blacker Than Black? Thanks for the help! You have no idea how excited I was to get this and put my other Blu-Ray player in my room and then to find out it doesn't display the blacks properly, it was kinda sad!

Settings > Display Settings > RGB Full Range (HDMI) > Full

The Super-White option is underneath that.

That still doesn't display all shades of black, that just makes the darker.

You do know that once you enable or disable any video features on your playback device, you may have to recalibrate your display, right?

I always had trouble understanding what Superwhite is exactly.
I had a pro calibrate mine and boy did he do an amazing job! Much better than I could possibly do in a millions years on my own.
It equipment can pinpoint specific wavelengths and colors and can get everything extremely accurate in the end.

I keep wondering this myself as well. My take on it though, is that RGB seems to be the more limited one similar to S-Video (and also RGB is the older style connector for computer monitors), where as the YCBR is what component video used to be called and has a higher number of colors available (as for component to TV had separate video color signals and so was the better quality than RGB). But of course, this might mean something else on the PS3 and so I am waiting for someone to explain which one is the better choice, and WHY.

Thanks

^^^

Well I experimented a bit and my XBR Sony takes both RGB or Y-Pb-Pr.
On RGB shadow detail disappeared when watching "Corpse Bride" (lots of dark backgrounds). When set to Y-Pb-Pr they came back. I set it to "Auto" and it stayed with the same picture as manually setting it to Y-Pb-Pr.

I also have set to "full" and Super White to "on".

Hard to say until they release a North American software emulation compatibility list. If PS1 and PS2 back compat is very important to you, your safest bet would be to get a 60GB now.

The existing European software emulation is improving with each new system software update, more titles are getting added and not all big, top-selling games either. Rez was added a while ago and Silent Hill 3 in the latest update on Tuesday.

Yes I do. That's how I know it doesn't display all shades of Black. Check out the test paterns on Sony's Blu-Rays, or even a THX optimizer. It wont ever display past the 7th box on that thing and no drop shaddow.

Hey guys, I’m hoping someone can help me out. You all seem very knowledgeable. When on the XMB screen (main screen when you turn the ps3 on), the text shakes at times. I do not know what is causing this. All cables are securely plugged in. Maybe I have a setting wrong? Has anyone ever heard of this? This often happens in pause menus in game, the text shakes. (Only certian games, happens in Ninga Gaiden, but never MLB the show) It’s really annoying and sometimes hard to read. Any help? Is my ps3 defective?

Thanks for any help
