I bought the UHD Tin Set in Australia (only way to get both UHD+BD in the one set).

I’m futureproofing as I dont have a 4KTV. Will probably get player before TV to watch HEVC transfers in 1080p and enjoy Dolby True HD 7.1 Core tracks.

On the BD side, I was disappointed to find a DTS-HD MA 5.1 track (that hovers around 2.1 Mbps), especially after a Dolby True HD 7.1 WB logo blasts through the speakers at the start, before the menu loads (which I’m assuming is Dolby Atmos).

This whole idea of putting Atmos/X tracks on 2160pBD and only DTS-HD tracks on 1080pBD is bullshit.

Last gripe: The 18Mbps average bitrate for the AVC codec seems a little low to me. I hope no there are no compression issues causing digital anamolies (especially banding, my pet hate) rears it’s ugly head.

Speaking of banding. I watched The Imitation Game on the weekend. There was an underwater scene with a U-boat... It was banding city. Yet to watch Hacksaw Ridge, but I’ve read there is a reference quality scene of banding in that too I’m not looking forward too).

Someone reported earlier in the thread that it does give UHD UV rights:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=458

(Talking about the UK version, but there's no way the UK would have better rights than the US, given that UK UV support is pretty poor - and most recent UK Warner TV blu codes seem to redeem globally.)

However I don't believe any UV service currently has it streaming in UHD - so it appears to only be useful from a future-proofing standpoint.

My copy should be arriving this week, so if somebody wants my digital copy, just send me over a PM and I’ll give you the code when it arrives. Please note that this is the British version, so make sure it’s playable in your country before you redeem.

I bought the uhd version. With my version, I got two digital copy code slips. I redeemed one of them and marked it. I've never sold or traded a digital copy code, but this seems like a good one to use. Where or how does one go to do this?

So... yeah... about this, the UHD presentation for 'Westworld' is full-frame, so there's no bars, or issues, at all.

Anyway,

I watched the first three episodes last night, was a bit tired to offer my brief thoughts, but here goes:

first, I'm using a LG 65-inch B6 OLED paired with the OPPO UDP-203. I don't have any black level issues, personally.

In fact, during the first episode, there were no issues at all with recognizing 'true black', as during the night time sequences in Westworld, specifically when Evan Rachel Wood's character (don't know the character names by heart yet--new to the show) goes to check on her father with her male companion, my screen was entirely black, when the night time skies surrounded the tress, characters, wooden fences, etc.

IMO, it presented a natural, almost three-dimensional like image quality.

I haven't had a chance to check out the HDR10 presentation, but I didn't run into any issues myself with the Dolby Vision rendering. In fact, the biggest benefit of Dolby Vision--or HDR in general--when it comes to this release, is that I was happy to have my expectations met and realized, by having a more subtle, complimentary approach, to what the filmmakers were capturing. Skin tones look very natural and well-balanced. The overall color palette, both Westworld, and the facilities where all of this stuff is being 'manufactured', range from both well saturated, to subdued and nuanced.

There's also some subtler moments where the HDR shines; like during the opening episode, on the train, the shadows are very, very dark, resulting in great contrast with the light and scenery shining through the windows. Yet, even in those deep, dark shadows, you could make out the detail in the texture of the clothing, materials, hands, etc.

No issues of any color banding to report.

As for the image being 'soft'--at times, yes, it is. It's not often, but seems to occur in close-ups more than wide-angled shots.

I can also see why the show's creators, decided to stick with a 2K-DI, if they felt the grain interacted too weirdly with the HDR implementation, when they explored the idea of using a 4K-DI. The grain, at times, does kind of provide an unusual interaction with integration of HDR. It looks more like digital noise, though, really. It's odd. For perspective, I love grain--and always prefer experiencing the content the way the artist intends--and it's never bothered me on catalog releases. But, you can definitely see how it could've been a distraction, more so than a natural inclusion, had they gone the route of a 4K-DI. I'd be curious to see more in-depth thoughts as to what caused this.

But, minor complaints notwithstanding, this is a definite upgrade over the blu-ray, which I did get to do some quick comparisons with. And, IMO, is definitely worthy of being able to show your friends, family, or whomever, what the benefit of HDR/Dolby Vision is, in terms of bringing forth content accuracy, the way it's intended to be viewed.

Very happy with this purchase. Both because it looks and sounds great--but also because I am enjoying the hell out of this series.

Good point about the lack of letterbox bars.

Looking forward to checking this out tonight. I'll probably watch the first episode in both Dolby Vision and HDR10.

I often wonder why some experience elevated blacks and some-like me and you-don't

I was excited to get my package today, but UPS just notified me they left my package at some random access point. I search the place and it’s some hookah store half an hour from where I live. I really wish amazon could let you pick your carrier.
