Oh yeah, the internet is great for the most part. Just have to avoid discussions about things like politics and religion with most people, which is the case for life outside the internet as well. I have a nephew who is 15 and he recently told me he is "bored with porn". When I was his age, in the early 2000s, the early stages of the internet were like finding an oasis in the middle of the desert. Kids today, so jaded haha.

Comments sections are the worst. Have you ever read the comments sections on posts by TCM on Facebook? They're horrible! And it's mostly baby boomers too.

As for porn, well, I remember when I was about 11 or 12 a girl from the neighborhood told us that her big brother just tossed out his porn stash so we should see if there's anything we want, so me and my buddy went dumpster diving for a bunch of old porn mags that turned out to be all in Norwegian (their family was originally from Norway). Good times! I tell ya, kids have it so easy nowadays!

Comment sections are poison. Youtube is the worst by far. I try to avoid Facebook completely unless I'm traveling somewhere where an old friend lives and want to contact them. I just can't handle the stupidity.

That porn anecdote is great. In 1998, when I was 11, I found a Playboy my dad had with I think a Swedish volleyball team on the cover. Finding that issue was like finding gold at that point.

You Tube is bad for comments but I've noticed more and more people who post there have responded by disabling them, so I haven't seen anything too toxic there in a while. TCM though, they're horrible but it's amusing if you're able to sit back and enjoy the show and not get sucked in too badly. The other day they posted a promo for an airing of The China Syndrome, well of course anything with Jane Fonda in it will cause certain people to go absolutely ballistic and you can predict exactly what they are going to say.

The good thing about the 'net though, is that you can always just close your browser if things start to frustrate you too much.

I will say that my 45 year-old self thinks that the new Kendrick Lamar album may just be the greatest hip-hop/rap album that I've ever heard.

...although I'll confess that I'll probably reach for my old Run DMC stuff from the early-to-mid 1980s more often.

I like a smattering of new(er) music acts. The new Cut Copy album is quite brilliant (even if it does remind me of Talking Heads - Remain in Light...yeah, I did old-man-music-comparison thing again, I know). I'm also loving the more abrasive band, Algiers, and their new release. I think that DIIV is a pretty amazing band as well.

Most of my favorite albums of 2017 so far, however, are albums from bands who were around during my youth or during my college days.

So, yeah, I'm getting old.

Late to the Richard Fleischer discussion. A great director. If 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was the only film he ever made, his legacy would still be secure.

I'm fairly new here and one thing I have noticed is how civil and respectful everyone is, which I greatly appreciate. It seems like a difference of opinion on most forums and comment sections leads to insults, threats, and strings of profanity that would have made my drill sergeant blush thirty years ago. I haven't seen that here. This place is a nice oasis from the less kind areas of the internet.

A lot of the recent comments on this thread is about things I've thought about lately, being in my late 40s. I feel a bit out of my element here sometimes because I don't keep up with a lot of the newer movies, and a big reason for that is that so many new movies seem to have been done already. The same goes with music, it just seems too familiar sometimes and uninteresting at others. I do like some newer stuff, Courtney Barnett's music being an example.

It does seem that in the past that things like movies and music and information had to be earned in the sense that some effort had to be made. I can remember in high school, before my family had a VCR, taking No Doz if a Marilyn Monroe movie was coming on late so I could stay up and watch it, and I remember sending money orders to cassette-only music lable ROIR and waiting a couple of months or more to get the music in the mail.

Now, I think we have an embarrassment of riches regarding movies and such. Eye of the Needle was a movie I always liked watching on cable when it had only thirteen channels, and now I have it on BD thanks to Twilight Time. I'm glad that many things are easier and more convenient.

Thanks to everyone for all the great information here. Apologies if this is too long, especially for a newbie.

You're just hanging out in the wrong threads, lol As Rory previously stated, far too much "opinion" expressed as fact by the younger generation, and the inability to debate differences of opinion in a respectful, civil fashion. Not all of them are that way, but many are. Seriously though, welcome. You will find most of us old farts behave like gentleman.......... most of the time

Awesome. I was just thinking this morning that there might be another big sale like this coming like they did last year. Tons of titles to choose from.

I just realized I have a meeting that starts at 4PM!

Fortunately, it's a phone meeting, so I can probably place my first order during the "hi how are ya" phase. I'm gonna grab "The Fortune Cookie" and a few low stock titles I don't want to miss out on, I'll probably do another order next week for some less immediate needs.

Default SAE shipping...

I will definitely be partaking in this sale. Tons of great stuff to catch up on from Twilight Time. Can someone remind me, as it's been a while since I last ordered from SAE, do their big sales tend come with any kind of discounted shipping?

No discount. SAE and TT.com both have unusual shipping cost formulas, completely different of course, so depending how many titles you want (and if they are available at both), you might be able to save a dollar or two one way or the other, but nothing significant, and likely not enough to justify the effort.

Nah, the haters are much more vicious. Any changes for them were a personal affront.
Supporters are always on the defensive there. Read some of the thread if you don't believe me.
