Default Bluray storage - Dilemma

As my bluray library grows, I am finding myself running out of shelf room quick. What do you guys do when you just have too many blurays to keep? Do you get rid of the cases and put the discs inside those portable CD folders? Do you use a whole room just for bluray storage?
This is getting out of hand and I dont have much room to spare anymore for my blurays. Any suggetsions?

Flight cases that hold double sided white envelope sleeves should do the trick, they can hold up to 5000 front n back and you can buy a pack of file a-z file sorters.

All of my Blu-rays are stored in these Target plastic storage bins in a big walk-in closet in my house. The plastic bins are organized by genre (film noir, horror, 80s comedy, western, etc.).

I've still got room in the walk-in closet, although I won't be able to purchase Blu-rays at the same rate that I did this year for much longer.

I keep all of my Blu-rays in their original cases and sleeves.

Do you guys have pictures and links to see excatly what you are talking about here? I was thinking of using CD folders/albums but that means losing the cases and all the nice artwork

I get creative and mix them in with my action figures and Funkos. I also stack them in groups in front of the rows (I store mine in an armoire that has plenty of front space).

Get slimline 6mm Blu-ray cases in bulk and save half the space. That’s what I do. Sometimes you might need to trim 1 or 2mm from the cover, but that’s mostly dead space anyway so it’s usually no big deal and spines are readable 90% of the time.

You can even get double slimlines for 2-disc sets.

I converted my whole collection to the thinner cases and never looked back.

I don't have shelve space problems, but I usually make a lossless MKV copy of my BDs to my portable HDD out of convenience.

I've really taken a liking to these. Normal pricing is $15-$20 and they occasionally show up (with tiny scratches or dings) used for $8-$10.

Stackable, wall mountable, reasonably priced and they seem fairly well made (though you don't want to drop them, the plastic is fairly brittle and cracks if you bang it around).

When my DVD collection got too big I did an inventory and began classifying movies into "A", "B", or "C" list. The majority of the "A" listers stayed on the shelf in their original packaging, while most of the "B" and practically all the "C" titles went into CD/DVD binders. I've since moved them out of the binders and into individual sleeves. I purchased one of those metal DJ storage boxes, which is where those DVDs currently reside in their sleeves. I kept most of the DVD sleeves in case someday I hit the Lotto and can buy a bigger house, in which case I'll want to display my ENTIRE collection

Now, I wouldn't do the same to my Blu-rays. For starters, most of my collection consists of titles I consider A-list so I don't want to slink them away in some closet or in bins under my bed lol. I keep my collection in check by cutting back on blind buys and I almost never purchase new theatrical films so this helps keep the numbers manageable.

Looks great, but not all of us have that much available space. I am looking for a practical way to conserve space but I dont want to get rid of the gorgeous artcovers

I built my own shelves, but now that I have almost ran out of space so I need to get rid of titles I haven't watched in a long time. I feel better doing this since I have backed up most of my collection onto 9 hard drives totaling nearly 37 TBs.

What I might do is buy a few of those CD/DVD wallets and store most of my older titles in them, while keeping the most recent and most watched ones on my shelves. I just dont want to get rid of the slipcovers because some of them are now hard to find and let's face it, it's not the same when you pull out a disc from its original case with artwork vs from a inpersonal CD wallet

I started to do this, backing up movies so I could get rid of ones I rarely watch. The external hard drive I was using was corrupted just a few days into doing this, it freaked me out and I decided not to sell anything.

It was probably a fluke, or a faulty hard drive, but I didn't feel like taking a chance, but I have a couple friends who have a large movie collection stored this way and got rid of most of their physical copies.

I am by no means a steelbook collection freak, and yet I just cant seem to be able to get rid of the nice slicovers that come with each movie. Just having the bare disc seems so unexciting...BUT the fact that I am running out o space is also very REAL

To save space, I put my DVD's in these:

[Show spoiler]

Using these Atlantic Movie Sleeves:

[Show spoiler]

https://smile.amazon.com/Atlantic-74...+movie+sleeves

And sorting them with these A-Z guides:

[Show spoiler]

https://smile.amazon.com/Vaultz-Stor...rds=vaultz+a-z

Each one can hold over 100 movies, and it looks pretty nice. I don't access my DVD's that often, but it's fun to flip through them. Did the same for my CD's with the CD version of those cases.

This might be a decent solution for some Blu-rays where you don't feel you need to admire the cover art for, making room for the ones you do want to display.

Hotandserious has it going on! Check out their gallery and pay particular note to the below.

If my DVD's and Blu-ray's weren't stored for playback in Sony 400-Disc DVD/Blu-ray players I'd definitely attempt to replicate the above though in my case I'd just be numbering the sleeves as I have my collection indexed and do all my browsing (by whatever criteria) in the digital realm.

My DVD/Blu-ray collection current weighs in at 4,344 discs. The majority of the retail packaging I keep in storage.

The boxes my Sony changers came in pictured above are being used to store the empty DVD and Blu-ray cases though if push came to shove I'd have no problem throwing all the cases away and only holding on to the cover art. I have no intention of ever housing the discs in conventional cases. I haven't since the early years of the DVD format. I also keep some of the empty packaging for my Blu-ray collection inside the house as I had a few empty cabinets I wasn't using for anything. Half of the storage containers in the pic above are empty though, so all the retail packaging could be stored out in the garage if I wanted with plenty of room to spare.

Cabinet above my washer...

Cabinet above my dryer...

Bookshelf in my living room...

All of the actual discs (2,250 DVD's and 2,094 Blu-rays) are stored for playback in my Sony 400-disc DVD and Blu-ray changers shown below which offer a combined storage capacity of 4,800 discs while only taking up 6 feet of combined (horizontal) wall space.

DVD Collection (Sony DVP-CX985V 400-disc DVD Players)

Blu-ray Collection (Sony BDP-CX7000ES 400-disc Blu-ray Players)

Each disc is cataloged in DVD Profiler being assigned its own Collection Number which corresponds with the physical location of the given disc, i.e. the particular Sony changer and slot number. I have separate DVD Profiler databases for my DVD and Blu-ray collections. (See my forum signature for online views of my DVD and Blu-ray collections. The websites aren't mobile device friendly though. Best viewed from a conventional computer/laptop and browser that supports frames.) Collection Number breakdown for each bank of Sony changers shown below.

Collection ID's 0001-0400 (Changer 1, Slots 1-400)
Collection ID's 0401-0800 (Changer 2, Slots 1-400)
Collection ID's 0801-1200 (Changer 3, Slots 1-400)
Collection ID's 1201-1600 (Changer 4, Slots 1-400)
Collection ID's 1601-2000 (Changer 5, Slots 1-400)
Collection ID's 2001-2400 (Changer 6, Slots 1-400)

The Collection Numbers are never reassigned. That's the only thing that needs to remain constant. Within DVD Profiler I'm then able organize my collection any way that I see fit in addition to being able to browse my collection by any number of criteria including things like "watched" status. Once finding a disc I'd like to play the Collection Number assigned in DVD Profiler is what calls out the location of the disc. (DVD Profiler does have a separate location field per profile, but I don't use that.) I then have a couple methods in place which provide for easily powering on the particular Sony changer and starting playback of the given disc. Those methods can be used to browse my collection as well rather than from DVD Profiler.

That being said, the fact I'm storing my discs for playback in Sony changers is really beside the point. I have several friends who index their DVD and Blu-ray discs in the same fashion using DVD Profiler. Rather than storing their discs for playback in Sony changers they're just using numbered sleeves. When finding a disc to play they're going to their storage cabinet, grabbing the disc from the numbered sleeve that matches the Collection Number in DVD Profiler and inserting the disc into their single disc Blu-ray player. Done deal.

Storing the discs in sleeves can really save on space. Indexing the discs and numbering the sleeves accordingly also eliminates the need to ever resort the physical discs as all the browsing is being done in the digital realm. You purchase a new title on Blu-ray, add the title to DVD Profiler assigning the disc level profile the next available Collection Number, then dropping the physical disc in the next available numbered sleeve (which matches the Collection Number), rinse and repeat. It's a great system and has worked beautfiully for me going back to the early years of the DVD format. I'm just using Sony changers rather than numbered sleeves.
