I was thinking more of the case were there was already an existing in-print Criterion DVD of a title. That kind of upgrade.

It could be an upgrade of A Nos Amours (translation:To Our Loves).

Hmm. I'm stumped.

Janus Films tweeted this picture of it the other day so that could be a possibility.

My first thought when I saw the Criterion email hint was, "Please don't let this be Battle of the Sexes."

It's probably not fair for me to judge a film that I haven't yet watched, but the presence of Steve Carell in a movie is the mother of all red flags.

Didn't they used to put something blue in the picture of they were teasing an upgrade, or am I imagining that?

Last Flag Flying is worth watching, although Carell is definitely the weak link.

Comedic actors like him can be excellent in films outside their normal genre. Sandler in Punch Drunk Love, Carrey in Eternal Sunshine, and Ferrel in Everything Must Go as a few examples. And speaking of Carell I think he looks like he's going to be great in Last Flag Flying.

I was sort of hoping for an offbeat clue to Haneke's Funny Games (1997), which I suspect will be coming down the Criterion pipes at some point, but the guesses from others here seem to fit the drawing more.

How psychologically draining movie. I don't think I can watch it again!

Yes. It was not a pleasant family film in the slightest. I get the urge to revisit such movies once a decade or so, however.

I have to agree. I'm not a fan of Carell as a dramatic actor. He's fine in comedic roles, but there's something about him that just bugs the hell out of me when he tries to do drama. I thought his performance in "The Big Short" was laughably bad and it felt like he was doing a serious version of an SNL character in "Foxcatcher". Speaking of tennis films, I saw "Borg vs. McEnroe" in theaters and it is really damn good. If you can look past the Shia LaBeouf factor, and he's actually very good in it, it's fantastic.

The clues always involve some play on words.

He's absolutely fantastic in Linklater's Last Flag Flying. Far and away the best dramatic work he's given, and the MVP of the film.

I've been planning to see that in theaters, hopefully in the next week or two.

To me Carrell always comes off as trying too hard. His acting doesn't seem effortless.

I think that's what it is. 2018 is the film's 35th Anniversary too.

That's true. Carell is like the anti Steve McQueen or Paul Newman or Robert Mitchum, guys who made acting just look easy.
