Sony vs Samsung

I've been browsing this forum for a bit now, but finally decided to register. I picked up a Sony BDP-S300 a few weeks ago, but I'm wondering now if I made a mistake. I cant find any definative info on the True HD and HDMI 1.3 for this player.

I've been researching the Samsung BD-P1200 lately.

Has anyone had experiences with both players? What are your thoughts?

The Sony S300 is a great player, but no, there is no TruHD yet. It is capable, but they have to release a firmware upgrade to make this posible. No, it does not have HDMI 1.3 either, sorry.

I own this player and love it. I use the 5.1 analog outputs and the sound is great, I also have no need for the 1.3 either right now, as my reciever and TV don't support it anyway.

I can't say as to the Samsung player, i'm sure it great also, but don't know the specs on it.

I went through the same dillema. The dealbreaker for me was that Samsung does not support DVD+ formats, which I have many DVDs recorded to...

The Sony is agreat player though.

I would say dump both and get a PS3, even if you dont play games

PS3 has faster loading time, able to store songs and photos and even other videos, can receive firmware updates either from internet or you can download to a memorystick and update it, BD remote so you can control it through walls etc, and you can use it to browse the net and download free trailers from the PSN

I was in a Sony store today asking the question about HDMI 1.3, and they told me with full assurance it did indeed have HDMI 1.3...?

does the s300 or the 1200 load faster? I have a 1200 on the way. already have a ps3 wife made me get rid of the second ps3 because she didn't like the extras. I got the 1200 because I heard the s300's load times were really slow.

I don't have an s300, but from what I've read and my experience with the BD-P1200, the sammy loads faster.

If you're thinking of getting the sammy, you may want to wait a couple of months as the 3rd generation samsung players will be out soon. They will decode TrueHD and DTS HD (maybe DTS HD MA - depends on who you believe).

HAHA, you got to love it, ask them what HDMI 1.3 does, then stare at the blank look in their eyes.

One of the issues I had was with the load times of the Sony....it was dog slow.

I took it back and got the Samsung for 100 bucks more, but BB also gave me a $100 gift card as well.

The Sammy loads a hell of a lot faster....so far so good, plus I like that it has the ethernet port on the back for firmware upgrades.

What about fan noise? Some of us watch movies at night in our bedroom on low volume. I don't play console games.

Yes, and even upconverts them to 1080p.

Yes, through HDMI only, however.... currently begging Sony to do it via component, also.

For the bedroom... get the S300 instead of the PS3. I can hear fan noise from my PS3, unless I have the volume turned up a bit. If you're listening at low levels in a bedroom, sitting closer to your PS3, this may drive you nuts.

I love my PS3, but honestly, it's a bit noisy when the fans kick in after a few mins.

As for the Samsung 1200, you could get that, too. I will warn you that the upcoming Samsung 1400 may not have SD DVD upscaling (the 1200 does). They aren't using the same cool chipset as the 1200 does, so you might want to be careful if you're waiting for the next generation of Samsung players. The more expensive 2400 is supposed to have it for sure.
