Any particular reason? His TV has 1440x900 pixels...not 1280x720...and this is a Blu-Ray player, not a PS3. As his display in 16:9 would be 1440x810, 1080i will give him an extra 27% over 720p (provided it deinterlaces properly (it does)), and owning a (second) TV of the same size, I can tell you that it does make a visible difference (especially if he chooses to crop to 1440x900).

Don't go into any menus...follow the player-specific instructions I provided and you're all set (again, I own the same player). The television doesn't even need to be turned on to fix the problem if you do what I stated in the original reply. My player might have been set to 1080p24 out of the box, now that I think about it...
