Thumbs down Magnavox NB500MG9 freezing? Any advice?

i have the Magnavox NB500MG9 and not really happy with it. couldnt play The Strangers, disk froze at the same point about 1/3 through. exchanged disk, same thing with replacement disk. couldnt even advance to next chapter, i had to buy the regular dvd. ha ha, i have a bd player but have to watch the regular dvd version, how bad does that suck?!?! had same problem with Firewall. does anyone know is that because of the outdated firmware? i think it probably is but any info would be appreciated. i dont think its a hardware issue because i will see it freeze at the same point all the time. reboots and it still freezes. also, it never froze on any dvd's even scratched ones.

i emailed funai about firmware upgrade and waiting for reply, but know what its gonna be. their gonna bascally say my player is disposable and there not releasing any upgrades. i didnt know that the firmware was such a big deal when i bought it or i would have got the ps3.

Yes, your solution is to take it back and buy either the Sony 350 or Panasonic 35K. I am not saying this to be rude either, I know a lot of folks were concerned with what a $130 BDP was going to be like compared to the $199-250 BDP's and well....... I think you just answered that question.

Don't think funai is offering any support on those players. They had a thread on Avs a while ago and nodoby founded anything. I think it's worth paying a little more, but know that the support is there.

i wish i could return it. bought it unopened on ebay a while ago for $200 incl shipping. now i see walmart has it for $129. well, you get what you pay for i guess. maybe ill try to have magnavox or funai or whatever send me a new one - if it still happens i can then demand a replacement or refund for there sub-standard product. i might be out of luck because they might not honor warranty because of ebay.

Default Disc Error -- Plese Eject the disc--

First post here.

I'm not sure if this related to this thread.. but I just bought 2 NB500MG9 Magnavox units ($128 ea at walmart). I figured, Consumer Reports said they were good, so i will try. .

I put in a DVD+R/DL and i got the error:
--Please eject the Disc.-
Playback feature may not be available on this Disc.

I burned again with just +R media, then tried one other. no go.

so, i opened the second unit, same issues.

I'm taking the first one back as i opened the box, and well.. it's going back. The second one will go back unless i can get an answer somewhere regarding my issue.

yea i actually thought about the fact that firmware might not be available for this player before i bought it, but then i read somewhere that firmware wont effect the movie files, but just the extras such as bd live, web links, etc. i have read things since then that have contradicted that. it doesnt make sense to me either because firmware upgrades are often put out for stablilty, right?

ive only had problems with 2 disks out of about 10, so its not too bad i guess.

does anyone here know about that? can the raw (.m2ts) movie files be affected by the firmware version? im pretty sure the answer is yes, but im assuming you guys figured that one out a long time ago. this forum is great, a lot of smart people giving great advice

Not all BD players will play all formats. especially burned discs.

I read the specs on this unit, it said
DVD +r / DL and dvd+R.

well, i took one unit back to Wally World, got Credit for $214. for something i paid $138 for.

will take the other back and hopefully get the same credit.

Well, I give thanks for the creation of this thread because I've been looking at generic brand blu-ray players on ebay as well. Looks like I'll be changing my mind. I'll just save my money for a PS3.

Cool Cheap BD

I got one of these 128 dollar blu rays and so far it works great. I haven't done anything but play blu ray discs and standard DVDs and don't plan on it. You can't expect to much from an older BD player that only cost 128 bucks. It seems to make a big difference on SD discs. The audio is great too. Even though it only has a coaxial cable no optical cable hook up. For the money it has been pretty cool so far. In my oppinion BD is a long shot to make it if the prices of discs don't come way down and you can't get them to rent for the same price as SD discs at your local Blockbuster. "Joe Average" just doesn't care. Can't really see the difference in picture quality and will not pay more for it. Let hope the fools running things get this through there heads sooner rather then later. Can you say SACD/DVD audio?

1. Has anyone else had issues playing the same titles on this player ?

2. What type of HDTV do you have and are you connected via HDMI ?
*If using HDMI, try using component or composite just to see if it resolves
the issue. This will help isolate if the issue is your HDTV and HDMI handshaking.

i got a toshiba hdmi crt tv (it old and dont have model number handy) connected hdmi through a switcher box. thats a good idea, ill try to go through the component and see. unfortunately i dont have either disks anymore. i returned Firewall to BBuster and The Strangers i reluctantly exchanged for the dvd and was really pissed off that i had to do so i might add. ill test that out the next time it happens. thanks

I believe that the sony 550/350 and the panasonic 35/55 all do, I know that the panasonic 35 doesn't play Divx, but the 55 does. search at crutchfield for these players and see if you can download the owners manuals. they usually have the .pdf file for most of the equipment online. For panasonic I know it will be in the first couple pages what formats the players play, I am pretty sure sonys manual is similar.
