IMHO the only bit that should not have been deleted was the extended conversation between David and the Engineer.

why did it have to be 2 hours though?. IS it because it's an R rated film. Seems dumb to me. Those scenes were great.
Look at most bigger films coming out, they tend to hit very close to exactly 2 hours. I suspect this is as it is long enough to clearly differentiate it from a tv show whilst also make it so you can have more screenings then a 2.5 or 3 hour film. That and I've noticed a trend of people complaining about films that go for more then two hours.

I wonder if the new 4k release incorporated any of the deleted scenes. I wasn't thinking to upgrade, but that might persuade me.

I pointed out four posts ago why it won't.

Yeah it's out, we've watched it, it's the same cut. I do hope we get an extended cut someday, but it seems unlikely.

Obviously we don't know what the future holds for the franchise right now, but I wonder if Ridley planned to do a director's cut of all the prequels, once he'd completed them? So kind of like revisiting them as a whole piece of work.

I saw your post in the UHD thread, it's great that you've grown to love the film so much now. Wonder if the same will happen with Covenant?

It's possible I suppose, but I grew to like Prometheus by ignoring the Alien connections, which is obviously harder with Covenant.

Ah right, so do you not like that the ideas and concepts introduced in Prometheus are part of the Alien universe, or was it just the execution? Would you have preferred if it had been its own, new franchise, rather than backwards engineering Alien?

I actually really like it as part of the Alien universe myself, knowing that it would eventually get closer to Alien as the films progressed, or as Covenant did, just jump straight in there. But yeah, if it's the combination of the new stuff mixed with Alien, I can see why you might not warm to Covenant.

Me too, and I think there was a chance of getting that when Ridley said there would be a few more of these films, but now... it's unlikely.

I hate the idea of explaining the origin of the xenomorphs, especially how they did it. Less is more, mystery, etc. With Prometheus though I reached a happy medium by basically ignoring the connections and treating it as a movie about the Engineers and their chemical weapon. All you really have to do is ignore the final scene to totally detach it.

Covenant is much more clear in connection, so it's impossible to disconnect it. Also David being the main character and cause of the story and such isn't something I enjoyed.

Worth mentioning the movies have flaws beside this stuff. Covenant's last act had zero tension and I hated the ending, for example. Wrote more about that stuff elsewhere. Both movies look amazing but have serious story issues. Prometheus I am just more forgiving of that.

Every single one of the deleted scenes would have made this movie better!

I'm thinking about picking up the 3d release for $10 at Best Buy, mainly for the 221 minute making-of documentary.

Can someone tell me if the doc spends some real time delving into the themes of the film and the story and the characters...as opposed to focusing on the look of the movie and the special effects and the photography and what not.

Because if it's mostly the latter, then it's not for me.

...frankly I couldn't care less how the CGI was done.

It delves into some of that stuff when covering pre-production and development IIRC, but once they get into actual production and post it focuses more on the nitty-gritty of making the movie.

The sticker on the shelf still said $9.99.

When I took it to the register it rang up at $24.99.

Apparently they had forgotten to change the sticker after the sale ended.

So they had to honor the price that was on the shelf.

On top of which, I had a $5 reward zone coupon, so I got it for $4.99.

...

As happy as I am about the deal I got, I just realized that I don't really like this movie very much.

It's okay...it looks great...but it's far from a great film imo.

As much as I loved Noomi Rapace in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, I still think she was terribly miscast in this role. Not to mention the generic pretty boy they hired to play her boyfriend. What's he up to these days?

I think I saw the guy who played the biologist in a Geico commercial recently.

Good for him.

...glad to see he's still getting work.
