Sony removed the mention of Dolby Vision from the release notes. The also bumped up the listed version to PKG6.2818.0075NAA. This defiantly sounds like a screw up on Sony’s part.

The profiles are there to distinguish the different arrangements of DV signal construction, it's not about using a "newer" or "older" profile because DV on disc has always been using profile 7 for example. And as far as I can tell nothing has changed on that front w/ref to DV on UHD disc, we know that DV players are working to that spec otherwise they wouldn't trigger it on other TVs. Quote:

But if it's not a sneak peek that backfired, then what is it? Could they have released it without genuinely being aware of how external devices can't trigger DV on the TV? That's all kinds of wrong if true as they've had a freakin' YEAR to work on this. It's not like there are dozens of players that they'd have to source for testing! [edit] And I understand Robert's thinking re: profiles on other players because he stated that he saw DV working off of a Sony X700 disc spinner at CES, hence the reasonable deduction that other brands of player may be using an older transmission system but again: why wasn't this double checked by Sony? Heck, DV output on the consumer version of the X700 player hasn't even been enabled yet (that's also due a firmware update in the summer of this year) so we can't even test the theory that only the Sony player has the means to trigger DV playback from disc. It also means that whatever Robert saw at CES was a special sauce version of the player so all bets are off in those kinds of scenarios as to what does what and how it does it. [edit the second] I'm assuming that the Sony booth in this video is where people saw it working, apparently it's a X700 going into a ZD9 and it's showing Spidey Homecoming which we know to be a DV on disc title. But unless someone physically ejected the disc from the player and noted that it was the retail version and/or checked that the TV was receiving an input over HDMI then yeah, my scepticism remains because special sauce. To be perfectly honest I get such amazing performance from my ZD9 that DV was only ever going to be a bonus. It certainly factored into my buying choice but, again, I'm not gonna go bananas demanding recompense or anything if it turns out to be a bust. I'd just like to know why Sony have botched it so far, as we all would like to know.

From the US website it does look like HDMI support was or is proposed:
![]() But one user here has been told emphatically by Sony support that DV is for Apps only: https://community.sony.com/t5/Televi.../650552/page/6 |

Nice spot, although I'm not sure that it lets Sony off the hook because it seems as if they're shifting the onus onto the "third party branded" players to make sure that they work with the TV, not the other way around. Looks like Robert was on the right track after all. But if this IS restricted to apps only then it's as much use to me as a concrete parachute. Ah well.

Forbes has chimed in, still waiting on a reply from Sony, but did mention the profile thing just like Robert.

Damn, not sure whose fault it is, but it looks like Sony has been taking the brunt of it. I've seen numerous people voice their dissatisfaction online and claim that they'll never purchase another Sony TV again as a result of this.
That seems a little extreme to me. |
