Default sound on Blu-ray seems to be very quiet?

hi, first of all im sorry if this has been covered already, but i have done a quick search and nothing came up,

what i was wondering is, in my experience the majority of Blu-rays that i have, seem to be really quiet? ie, i have to almost double the volume on my tv, Usually i have it around 22, but for Blu-ray it needs to be up close to 40 so i can actually hear it, or does this depend on my setup, i am using a sony bravia tv and a sony s350 Blu-ray player, but i do not have a surround system yet, maybe this is the problem? sorry if i seem a little naive.

What discs? Are they Dolby TrueHD tracks?

Make sure that you turn off DRC in the player and/or receiver as this may be causing the problem.

If it's just the T.V. speakers, it's probably a compression issue due to audio settings on your blu ray player

i have just tried the DRC setting, and i have 4options, Auto, standard, TV mode and wide mode, and none of them have made any difference.

the following list is the current setting that i have on my Blu-ray player.

Audio output priority - HDMI
Audio (HDMI) - Auto
BD Audio setting - Mix
Audio ATT - off
Dolby Digital - Downmix PCM
DTS - Downmix PCM
48KHz/96KHz PCM - 48KHz/16bit
Audio DRM - Auto
Downmix - Dolby surround

all the above is like reading greek to me, really do not understand any of it, but maybe some one might spot something?

What's Audio DRM? Sounds like it might be a dynamic range setting.

I will say, that many BD's I have with TrueHD tracks do need to be turned up much more than others. For whatever reason, the entire mix is quieter. However, once the volume is level-matched, they're just as dynamic as my other movies.

Yeah, you need to change that from Auto to Off.

i have tried that but there is no 'off' option, all i have is Auto, standard, tv mode, and wide mode, i have tried all four with no success,

i also changed the 'Audio output priority' to 'Stereo Analogue' but that did not solve the problem either.

thanks for the halp any way guys, its very much appreciated.

Check your manual for an explanation of each function then. Same goes with a few of those other functions that I'm not sure about. However, like I said earlier, some TrueHD movies are just quieter. Once you level match to your normal listening volume they should be fine.

since your using just your tv for sound I suggest you pick the lower res audio as your really won't benefit from the lossless audio. Also you will typically have to boost your volume higher when listening to lossless tracks because of the increased dynamic range. You should actually turn on your DRC as this will make the volume of dialogue and explosions closer.

Use plain DD or DTS(lossy, low res) vs. TrueHD and DTS-MA(lossless-high-res). If a stereo mix is available use that and like I said since you are using only TV speakers turn you DRC on.

You need to both set your player to output 2-channel stereo as well as in the setup menu on each BD/DVD that you watch. Most discs default to 5.1-channel audio, so you are only getting 2 of the 6 channels resulting in a lower volume, not to mention a loss of 4-channel's worth of audio information. Use the 2-channel audio settings until you get a 5.1 or 7.1 audio system.

Default Bump with my own issue

Hi, I've got a little Sony S3500 Bluray player which is connected by HDMI to the TV, I've also got a cable box connected. However, the dialogue on anything from the Bluray player (which includes streaming from Netflix, for example, as well as playing DVDs or Bluray discs) is very quiet compared to anything on the cable.

Whenever I switch from the Bluray to the cable box, I need to turn the volume way down as a result (and vice versa). The cable box is not connected by HDMI.

Any ideas? Any settings on the TV or on the Bluray player to fix this? Or could I try switching from HDMI over to something else?

Thanks
