Yes, I know. The Retromedia is apparently awful, in both encoding and image quality (I just cancelled my order) so I was hoping the 12/26 news item (which lists Kino and not Retromedia) wasn't a misprint/mistake, but I'm not expecting it to be.

Fred should have left it to the professionals (and Kino would have used the nice-looking MGM transfer to boot).

Nevermind, it was pointed out to me that the above-linked news item was from 12/16, not 12/17. So we’re definitely stuck with the Retromedia disc.

Dear KL INSIDER, if you work out a new deal with MGM could you guys please consider releasing this movie on blu-ray?

I Know MGM has the rights to Gas Pump Girls not sure about the other 3 but it would be awesome if they could also get a blu release. I would buy them for sure !

I watched my Manufactured on Demand copy of Gas Pump Girls last night and the picture was pretty good but the cover art for the DVD sucks. I know Kino could improve upon the picture quality and they would actually use the original movie poster art for the blu-ray cover.

More Late 70's and 80's movies please KL Insider, thanks dude.

Someone should rescue Deadly Strangers. At least Twisted Nerve and Endless Night were released in the UK on DVD.

I'd like to see more of the 1960's AIP Beach Party films released on Blu-ray.

Is it for people who don't know who Robert De Niro is by name, but would remember him positively when you say "That guy who was in Analyze That and Meet the Parents"? For it to make sense from a marketing perspective, apparently they will sell more copies by marketing it to people who like Robert De Niro but not enough to remember his name without prompting? But if it really had a positive impact on marketing, it would be more prevalent on movie posters; I have seen posters and cover art where they have to explain who a person is under their name, but it's pretty rare, and always a sign of a low budget movie.

It's like opening a Best Man speech with "For those of you who don't know me..." If somebody knows who you are, they don't need it, and if they don't know, they don't care. At least Kino is cross-promoting other titles, that makes sense to me.
Back in 1973, 20th Century Fox went out of their way in the marketing department to explain audiences that the leading star of the film, Roy Scheider, was last seen in "The French Connection". A car chase is showcased on the poster, with another parenthetical that states the anonymous producer was also behind "Bullet and The French Connection." It's a funny phenomenon that seems ahead of the home video era, as you'll think studios would rattle this tactic to films with lesser-known leading stars, outside of Oscar-bait films that is and for the blockbusters faire. I guarantee most moviegoers who see those Marvel flicks couldn't tell which Chris is playing the character.

The marketers want to lure people into buying these films, but who honesty is going to buy a film such as "Copland" because they like De Niro in one of his vomiting-inducing comedies?

Who has Bear Island (1979)? That's a film I'd like to see from Kino, great cast, based on an Alistair McLean novel. Hasn't been available since VHS days.

I'd buy all of those Alistair McLean flicks.... none of them are legitimately "good" movies but they're all fun because of the casts....

Columbia had it internationally after putting up a third of the budget (releasing a heavily cut version in some territories and on VHS, though their widescreen DVD is uncut) and United Artists originally had it in the US but seemed to have farmed it out to Taft International - basically Sunn Classic with a name change - at some point (the first one sheet design has a UA logo, the revised one has a Taft International presents credit). The Taft/Sunn Classic library went to Republic and then Paramount, but since it was an independent picture with a fairly elaborate financing system it probably now belongs to the Bank of Montreal, who underwrote the picture, unless they sold it on. It didn't get particularly wide distribution anywhere outside of Canada.

With Sony still owning international rights, Indicator in the UK seems the most likely source for a BD of this one.

The 'from the people who gave you' practice was pretty common in the 70s:

For some reason they didn't include 'Gene Hackman's co-star' to that one, but they did later drop The French Connection altogether for the VHS release in favour of one of his, ahem, more recent efforts:

The 'people who gave you' practice was so widespread that it was parodied in the Dead Men Don't wear Plaid trailer:

Simple equation:
Copland - US gross: $44.8m
Analyze This - US gross: $106,885,658
Meet the Parents - US gross: $166,244,045
Meet the Fockers - US gross: $279,261,160 (more than all of his films with Scorsese combined)

And while Ice Station Zebra may not be considered by critics to be as good as those three, it is one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies. As director, John Carpenter said I can't quite figure out why I love Ice Station Zebra so much.

United Artists released Bear Island in Canada. I don't know the story behind the future Jensen Farley Pictures releasing it in the US.

I personally loathed Ice Station Zebra but a lot of that was due to the phoniness of the sets. Also thought it crawled while the aforementioned films zipped.

Wonder how I'd feel about it with a fresh set of eyes and different approach.

I think he means the lesser ones, like Puppet On A Chain and River of Death. I'm sure there are other third-tier McLean-inspired flicks out there.

Fear Is the Key, The Secret Ways (Richard Widmark version from early 60's),
Caravan to Vaccares (rumored to be coming from Scorpion), and The Golden Rendevous
are others that come to mind.
