Every studio uses different methods and every title is a bit different. Some are done better than others. You think there’s a single checkbox in a single piece of editing software that every single 2K DI upscale by every studio has had checked? Tons of variables involved - algorithms, softness settings, edge enhancements (or lack of) etc. There’s a myriad of adjustments as to how the images are upscaled, and it’s all up to the editor(s) controlling the software. There’s a major element of creative liberty involved here and visual opinions abound (good and bad). Oblivion UHD being a perfect example of how to completely botch an upscale job. Start out with one of the most excellent 2K sources in existence, and ruin it for UHD. Sure it’s got great HDR - completely different component of the editing job as a whole. But whoever was in charge of the upscale and overall softness/sharpness decisions (and they were intentional decisions) needs to be fired as it ruined what could’ve been a top 3 reference disc as it is on std BD. It’s almost like the Oblivion editors didn’t actually have a UHD display to verify their final work on. Like they literally were viewing their final passes on 1080p monitors and saying “looks great - nailed it!” See what I’m getting at? I would think / hope these upscales will continue to get better and sharper as time is spent editing on the format. Equipment gets refreshed/improved. I can only hope Oblivion gets a second release and Edge of Tomorrow gets a proper editing job. Maybe Oblivion was our sacrificial title in the education of how to upscale properly for UHD. |

I'll echo the sentiments. This deserved a perfect review and if it hadn't gotten one, I would have revolted.
This was the first UHD I watched on my TV when I got it and was immediately blown away. Still my #1 go to reference disc. |

if this is an upscale, well slap me stupid.
looks really sharp and there's great definition. did a blind buy for this with both blade runners in 4k. wasn't expecting to be wowed by this disc, but it's so good. is the starship troopers disc as gorgeous as this. |

Sorry the movie didn't hit your quota. I think it is a shame that you are more concerned with quantity over quality. Mako was a solid character.
