I saw the latest Nielsen numbers. 74% ... AWESOME
Have you guys noticed that over the last two weeks or so, more and more HD-DVD commercials have started playing on TV. About 6 weeks ago I went to the movies (since a very long time) and saw this HD-DVD commercial where this certain director (forgot the name) was watching King Kong on his HD TV and saying how Toshiba's HD-DVD is showing his movies as intented, and even make his standard DVDs look better. It then ends with his signature ... or something like that. I now start seeing that commercial on TV. Last week I think I saw it once, but this week I've seen it several times already. I guess it's toshiba's final and last attempt to get the word out that their product is superior. (according to them of course) |

Yeah, it's the commercial with Christopher from the Sopranos in it (Michael Imperioli). I guess if the price is right, you'll say anything or get anybody to schill for your product huh?

I saw those when I was back in the USA a few weeks ago. They don't exactly make me want to run out and buy an HD-DVD player. Not very effective. |

I've been meaning to post something about this hd-dud ad campaign for a while.
Both in the print, movie theater and tv commercials, they play up Michael Imperioli as an actor and director/filmmaker. Absolute, pure f***ing fud. They're saying this in these ad's so you will supposedly take his word as a serious film professional that "HD-DUD" is the choice of the filmmaking community -- and they have shots of him standing next to a movie camera, talking to the DP like he knows what he's talking about... and at the editing system with his editor... yeah, ok. I'm sure he's a nice guy and the money, free player and movies from the HD-DUD PR group was to tempting to resist. But the truth is, Imperioli is an actor, sometimes writer (a few Soprano's episodes, summer of sam) and that's it. (credits here: http://imdb.com/name/nm0408284/) The ad's try to sell him as a big filmmaker. It's stretching the truth to say the least. Truth be told, the HD-DUD group probably couldn't get a big filmmaker to be in their ad campaign. That said, the BD group will hopefully be more aggressive getting the endorsements they've already got from top of the line real filmmakers out to the general public... those by John Lassater, Jerry Bruckheimer, Ridley Scott... and hey, rope Spielberg in there too. And a better ad campaign for HD-DUD would be Imperioli and the rest of Soprano's cast breaking into peoples homes, beating the crap out of and torturing people until they bought a hd-dud player and some movies. Which wouldn't be far from what they probably will really have to do to get the general public to buy hd-dud players. They tried free movies, price cuts... outside of giving the machines away, brute force might be the only way for the format to survive. |

Actually it's pretty pathetic with all the companies in the BDA that they don't have a dedicated Blu-ray commercial for the format as a whole.

It would be cool if they did, after all the only thing it would do is hopefully boost sales....not like theres anything to lose.

I get your point about Imperioli being portrayed as an actor/director, but don't blame him. He's just collecting a check. Hell, if Toshiba offered to pay me 6 figures to be in an HD-DVD commercial, I'd do it. Then I'd go home and watch Blu movies I bought with that money!
![]() And besides, there are many video projects to direct other than movies -- there's TV, commercials, music videos, and private video pieces that the general public never sees. Plus, many "stars" produce and direct projects that are independent and don't end up on mass-market sites like IMDB. Or they co-produce or co-direct and might be uncredited. My point is that just about anyone who has been acting for more than 5 minutes will, at some point, produce or direct. |

And, as I said, I'm sure he's a nice guy and that he's just cashing a check (like a lot of us shamelessly would... it's going to be wasted anyway) -- but he's about as much as an expert to comment on an HD format as Paris Hilton is. Okay, that's too harsh. I take that back. Then he's as much an expert as Billy Baldwin (because Daniel has been in rehab too much to watch movies and Alec's been too busy in the courts). Or basically anyone on this forum is more qualified to speak to the public about choosing a HD format. It was just a very, very odd choice on their part. I mean, someone like Chuck Norris could've been a a weird, but better choice... "Buy HD-DVD or I'll kick your ass". Eek. Don't I know it. |

Agree 100% with this. A nice 30/60 second spot showing not just the studios but the big filmmakers/producers that are behind BD would really help the average consumer remember to buy blu-ray.

They have one that shows on Discovery HD from time to time. Shows Narnia, Superman and Harry Potter. They need to step it up though.

I know we are in a format war and all but why all the hatred towards HD DVD? I own both and while I lean more towards Blu-ray I still enjoy HD DVD.
The part I can't stand is the stupid Combo Discs they put out. It also seems like a lot of HD DVD's are the same quality as DVD especially Universals releases. |
