Oh, me too! I seriously think Mission: Impossible is an underrated film, period. But definitely Cruise' best movie, and the only DePalma film I actually rewatch. All the pieces came together on that one.

Good choice of style. Good tone. Amazing sequences. Keopp written. Jon Voight. Enough nods to the series; and maybe the best part, the most (nay, only?) memorable Mission Impossible soundtrack. Rock on, Mr. Elfman

The first one is still my favourite and is indeed SUPER underrated. Dunno about Cruise's and De Palma's best film though.

I agree about the audio side of things, the laserdisc for MI had a terrifically dynamic sound mix and even the lossless BD pales in comparison.

I heard new movie. Mission Impossible: Fallouts and watched trailer preview look great.

I hope it'll coming on UHD 4K with Atmos Dolby.

The original film is awesome.
Also had one of the best trailers ever made. I must have watched it 50 times before the movie opened.

Cannot wait to get these on 4K

I've been meaning to import 1-3 for some time particularly since I had hoped the lossless 1 disc would be better than the shoddy US releases in terms of audio. Interesting to hear that even the newer disc doesn't hold up. I guess they used the same source as the older discs which was maybe a tamed down home video/TV airing track. Are 2 and 3 any better in the audio department than the stock US discs?

Even the matrixed PCM 2.0 on the LD wipes the floor with the later DVD and BD. Sure it's not quite as good as the discrete ac3, but its still the same badass mix. (Come to think of it I also still prefer the Top Gun ac3 on the remastered LD to later discs but that's a much closer comparison.)

Ok, I am currently rewatching these on Amazon Prime.
MI1 has the best heist which hasn't been topped so far.
MI2 and MI3 were a lot better than I remembered them. MI2 is CRAZY and I love it.

MI3 has the best villain to date.

Seymour Hoffman rocked that role.

Funny you should say that cause that is the main reason I dislike M: I 3 so much. No disrespect but I cannot stand Hoffman in his role as the main villain.

Damn! It's been that long since the first movie came out? Makes me feel old.

2 and 3 are the same as 1, same underlying mix as what was used on the lossy blus, just encoded lossless. (MI3 always sounded rather good anyway though.) Back in the day I compared Star Trek Generations' LD 5.1 mix to the DVD 5.1 and the latter sounded so dull and neutered, whatever Paramount were doing to their mixes for DVD (and beyond) really did kill the dynamic range on a lot of them.

As for Top Gun, the LD used the 6-track mix as you know so it sounds awesome but yeah, the BD audio is a lot closer. I measured certain scenes on the Dolby and DTS soundtracks with an SPL meter and there was a vast difference between them, I think the speculation was that the Dolby track is an upmix of the conventional Dolby Stereo mix while the DTS was derived from the 6-track? The BD sounds great, anyways.

Wasn't that how old the original series was when the film was released in 1996?

The film versions of this old TV show were rare examples of quality filmmaking. What other TV shows spawned a successful string of films 20+ years after the first one was a major hit? I honestly can't name any. My absolute favorite of the series is the third one. I enjoy it more than the original but I also hold that first one in very high regard. Ghost Protocol was fantastic as well. My least favorite is the 2nd film followed by Rogue Nation. Very much looking forward to this set.

The TrueHD track is the 5.1 70MM mix, the DTS-MA is a ES 6.1 remix with the levels goosed beyond distortion - someone posted the levels in AVS and they reminded people of the ways CDs were being "remastered" with the levels pushed way up and crushed dynamic range. The LFE level alone is something like +10dB on the DTS track.

I will admit to being a complete audio wh*re on this occasion and say that I prefer the DTS mix, it's OTT in a way that's perfectly commensurate with the film that it represents

I just love how he deadpans everything. He's so menacing and convincing. One of the few PG-13, summer blockbuster movies, where as an audience member, you're not convinced everyone will make it out alive, due to Seymour Hoffman's portrayal as Owen.

I wonder when Paramount will send out the press release for this?

I envy you if you got to see Ghost protocol in an IMAX 15/70 theater. Even watching the scene I think you're talking about on Youtube impresses me >

I would consider taking a vecation and travel to any city where this is playing a rerun on IMAX. Any clues how to find that out?

This release has my interest! I still remember seeing MI1 in the theater and loving it back in the 90's. I enjoyed each of the movies a lot but only own Ghost Protocol so I'm stoked to get them all in a box set. 4k is the perfect excuse to watch them all over again!

The IMAX stuff was immense in 15/70, the shot about halfway through that featurette of the camera going over the top of the Burj is when the letterboxing started pulling back to fill the whole screen and it looked incredible.

Anyone heard about the exact possible release date for these movies in 4K? The reason why I asked is cause the MI's I have on BD, I'm gonna sell them since I'll be getting these movies in 4K.
