Australia was bad and Slumdog is without question the most overrated movie of the year.

havent seen Australia, but Slumdog deserves every bit of praise it gets.

But I would have to say TDK is the most overrated movie of the year.

Slumdog Millionaire, however, does have a wide release. It came out on the 21st of December although it was playing at art house cinemas before then. I am also sure since the movie is so hyped and is doing quite well for not a mainstream film...and the many oscar nominations it will get (and might win), the sales will be way up.
I was being a little sarcastic. Even in its "wide" release its only playing in 600 theatres. That is an average of 12 per state. A movie shouldnt be considered for the oscars unless it is released in enough theatres for most Americans to actually see it.

Once it gets nominated it will be released wide, so then everyone who wants to see it can see it.

And even if the whole nation doesnt see it, the film will always be known for how great it is...the way I see it is there are plenty of BIG films that make a good amount that will be totally forgotten about in 10 years.

I get a feeling our opinions are going to differ no matter what. It seems you are one of those people that only like things arent popular or trendy.

Not really I just go more for the "artsy fartsy" films and people view me as a "movie snob" but whatever its all about quality to me. But I like a lot of summer blockbusters because they are good fun, but other than that there is hardly any big wide releases that appeal to me.

You really should experience Australia in the movie theater, it was made for the big screen. I agree with the above folks, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED AUSTRALIA. I saw it 3 times! I know, all my friends think I'm crazy.

They just don't make movies like this anymore - it had everything - romance, drama, comedy, special effects, and a message - a complete cinematic experience. It's just heartwarming, uplifting, and so refreshing in view of how there seems to be so much darkness and creepiness in films today. I guess it's old-fashioned.

Just be warned though - it seems people either really love it or really don't care for it (my friends were split). It's too bad it got mostly horrible reviews from critics and really bombed at the box office. Definitely a day one purchase on blu for me though!

Special effects? Come on the footage of the bombing of Darwin mostly was 90% recycled from an old movie made in the 70s about Pearl Harbor called Tora! Tora! Tora! even the footage of the japanese zeros taking off is from Tora! Tora! Tora!.

What are you saying? That they incorprated footage from Tora! Tora! Tora! into the film?? Look, I'm just saying it had special effects, I'm not saying it is THE special effects movie. I was thinking more in terms of the bulls and that chase scene on the cliff.

From 2008?

Milk, The Wrestler, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Dark Knight, Happy-Go-Lucky, WALL-E, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Synecdoche New York, In Bruges, Frost/Nixon, Funny Games, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Shine A Light, The Duchess, Iron Man, Pineapple Express, The Visitor, Burn After Reading, My Blueberry Nights, Caramel, Rachel Getting Married, Man on Wire.

All better than Slumdog Millionaire as far as I'm concerned.

You have a fairly mixed list of films, most of which I would say are very good. I'm not sure why you are singling out SM as some art-house film that is over rated when half of the films you listed ARE art-house films that most average Americans wouldn't have the chance to see even if they wanted until they hit the home market...

Damn I agree with you more so than anyone on this site! lol but I dont see why you think SM is so overrated, I mean it was a very original story with beautiful visuals and camera work...but w/e to each their own.

I don't think Slumdog Millionaire is a bad film. I think it's a good film, but the critical reaction was this outpouring of total, unmitigated hyperbole. I just can't fathom why it has received such massive praise.

But there are always films that people wonder HOW they got such great critical reviews...Twilight for me.

I'm not really sure the critical reception for Slumdog Milionaire and Twilight are comparable.

Anyways, in addition to the massive critical praise, it's probably going to win Best Pic at the Oscars. Like I said, not bad...just overrated.

Metacritic
Slumdog: 86 ("Universal acclaim")
Twilight: 56 ("Mixed or average reviews")

Rotten Tomatoes
Slumdog: 94% ("Fresh")
Twilight: 50% ("Rotten")

I don't see how their critical reception is comparable at all.
