On the shelf it was listed as $10 but ran up as $15 - I insisted the cashier change it and she did.

Finally got around to watching this on UHD and I prefer the warmer palette. I do not feel it’s the mess many say, in fact it’ll be the only version I watch. HDR was gorgeous on this.

I've seen this three times since I picked up the UHD. The slightly less detail that presents itself in the UHD version doesn't bother me too much; kind of disappointing, but not a deal breaker. I definitely agree that the HDR is the real winner. It's not eye-poppingly amaze-balls by any stretch, but it does a fine enough job and gives this release a little bit more of an "upgraded" feel to it over the standard BD (less detail notwithstanding).

I am generally satisfied to have added this to my collection.

So I was not that delusional after all, in claiming this is a magnificent UHD and overall superior to the standard bluray

As am I, this is very much another Batman Begins: hyperbole will paint it as the worst thing ever but there ARE improvements to be found, I love the HDR on this - it's just such a shame then that they had to filter the detail to shit in order to do it. It doesn't even look that bad in motion because of how the increased contrast of HDR in higher frequencies helps to paint over the cracks but man, when I put the BD in the increase in detail is HUGE, "ignorance is bliss" and all that. As I said a few days ago: That detail plus this HDR grade and this would be a top tier title, 2K master be damned. As it is, I like it but it's got to go into the drawer marked "screwed up launch title, could do better".

Yeah there is less detail but the extra warmth and like you said increased contrast it works for it. You’re right, if it had extra detail which it SHOULD it would be one of the better titles. But I’m happy with it.

One of the reasons I have found complaints about the use of 2K DIs to create UHD HDR output to be overblown is that HDR does exponentially more for my viewing pleasure than having a native 2160P image does.

Improved colors and improved dynamic range are what makes this and Batman Begins still a solid upgrade to me. Batman Begins has the added benefit of having better detail most of the time (damn you waxy face Alfred!)

I've always told people, especially to people I know that the 4K resolution in of itself (2K or 4K DI debate aside) are not going to be the biggest difference, it's the HDR grade of the image that will entice people. People hung on 2K/4K DI are only focused on ONE aspect of what is supposed to be improved over Blu-ray. As Geoff has stated many, many, many, many, many, many (did I say many?) times, the UHDs and even 2K DI still have the benefit of having better chroma detail, which still improves the perceptive image sharpness, despite only have a minor bump in physical resolution. It's also worth mentioning the higher mbps helps to resolve even just the 2K resolution better.

With Oblivion, I'm not going so far as to agree with RockyIII and say that this is a magnificent release, but again, it is a satisfying release nonetheless that I don't regret double dipping for.

And then there's also this lovely reason for not minding the double dip:

HDR is my MVP of UHD for sure, I just don't like seeing a 1080p disc beat the pants off of a UHD - upscaled or otherwise - for spatial resolution.

Ever thought that sometimes a softer picture might work better in certain scenarios? Who established that every movie must be razor sharp? Unless it's so soft to the eye to the point of being distracting, who cares really

I think the point people keep bringing it up is that people are noticing it and being distracted by it. Maybe it's being slightly overblown or overemphasized, but it is still noticeable enough to the point that people who saw the original Oblivion BD release and then picked up the UHD are noticing it without having seen that original release for some amount of time.

I think the argument is the BD is definitely sharper and being that it’s 4K, it shouldn’t be. I didn’t find the image not sharp, I just found it not as sharp as the BD which is odd. But like I said, I really liked the warmer look much more than the sterile BD.

If the movie wasn't supposed to be razor sharp then it shouldn't have been presented that way on Blu-ray (and I'm assuming theatrically?).

Isn't the streaming UHD copy free of the unsharpening filter found on the disc copy? I never checked for myself but I swear that was a thing in this thread a long time ago, and the disc is just poorly handled.

The streaming UHD copy would suffer from other and bigger issues

I nearly bought this today and changed my mind. I'm not sure if it's worth the upgrade. I like the BD quality a lot plus it's not a movie that I watch very often.

Yes but it'd prove the disc wasn't what it was meant to be like.
