But being young fit and active does mean that she could have learned rock climbing and basic archery in the 20+yrs of her life that the bloody film doesn't show us.

Basic common sense people it's a ****ing action-adventure popcorn film, not flippin' Solaris. Moaning about a handful of skillsets not established in the 20min opening act goes beyond anal nitpicking and straight into complete gibbering idiocy.

This is why film runtimes have balloooned so much in the last ten years, because viewers are too thick to read between the lines and need every single aspect of a story or character explained to them, and then moan when a fantasy/action franchise exaggerates reality a bit.

Amazing. Every word of what you just said.. was wrong.

In the world where character development and storytelling matter. But even the gameplay is improved as far as I'm concerned. And yes the new Lara is far more relatable and a better role model.

And yes I have the original games, I even have the original on SEGA SATURN O_O

This is why I dont like the idea of the new movie because for me, the games dont just give me generic action/adventure.
I dont want explosions/guns and military looking rubbish.

the original games, whilst maybe feeling clunky by todays overall standards, had gameplay that was completely original and unique to itself. No other game felt and played like the originals.
Whereas the new ones gameplay feels like multiple other games including the Uncharted games

That personally, I think, would have resulted in a much better movie imo as I find this new origin story/game, incredibly weak personally.

Although im in the camp that does not like the casting of Lara even if her body is completely correct to the new game.
I would LOVE a film version of Tomb Raider III or Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation with Vikander in the role. The first two Jolie films were basically Tomb Raider (the Scion was made into the Triangle of Light) and The Cradle of Life had the locales, the diving suit, and the shark encounter from Tomb Raider II. I'd say leave those alone and take inspiration from the two I mentioned. Even Tomb Raider: Legend had some neat set-pieces and story beats.

You are right, what the original Tomb Raider games needed was less tomb raiding and more murdering endless mercenaries like Nathan Drake.

I recently played the two newest games and whilst I love them to bits (or bytes), my Lara was an animal murdering, corpse looting, psychopathic serial killer, who bathed in the blood of her victims.

I'm not sure if she's the best role model for young ladies ...

I love the Uncharted games (My favorite game series of all time) so how is that a bad thing? Yes, the old games were innovative. That doesn't make them good by today's standards. That's why I said they were classics, but as time moves forward, storytelling in games has improved, along with gameplay design.

People put this same idiotic complaint on the Uncharted games. Since when does killing to survive make you a "psychopathic serial killer"? One of the dumbest complaints about a game I've ever heard.

Which is LITERALLY what I said in my original comment. That for this film (as with most action films), you have to suspend your disbelief. I'm not the type of movie viewer that can easily do that. I don't like action/adventure films. Hence, my comment and "nit-picking".

The film's actually more grounded than the game, there is no miltary/guns/explosions. It's all very grounded by Hollywood popcorn standards.

Since TR is killing it in China he turned out to be an excellent casting choice.

Why does a video game character has to be a role model? smh..

and I highly doubt this movie would have happened, if it wasn't for the popularity of the old games anyway

Ehhhh, I dunno about that. 2003's The Angel of Darkness still has the best story and characters, in my opinion. Such a shame that Core Design weren't given the opportunity to follow through with their trilogy.

Pretty much this. I like the reboot era a lot - especially Rise - but they're not exactly innovative and they do owe a lot to Uncharted (which owes a lot to Tomb Raider, so it's like a never-ending cycle).

The new games wouldn't have happened if the old games weren't popular either, but they did happen, and they were very popular and critically acclaimed. Much more popular and rated higher than the last few pre-reboot Tomb Raider games as well. The new movie wouldn't have happened without the success of the rebooted games.
