The first half of JP2 is actually structured very much like JP1 -
-Mysterious dinosaur attack in the beginning -Main character meets Hammond - discusses travelling to an island -Roland and Ajay deleted scene resembles Dodgson and Nedry meeting scene. -Characters meet majestic herbivores on arriving at the island. -Kid enters the fray; makes adults nervous. -The two Mercedes cars resemble the Ford explorers from the first film, right -down to the jungle paint-job, the glass-roof and a high-tech appearance with antennas, numerous lights, cameras, etc. (I love the cars in both the films). -The RV attack also is similar to the Explorer attack from the first film. -One bald guy gets eaten by the T-Rex(es) (I guess Crichton, while writing The Lost World, was paying homage to Spielberg's JP. The escape of the characters from the workers village in the novel, is very similar to how Grant and co. escape from the control room in JP film). -In the workers village, the main characters get attacked by raptors, just like the folks in JP do, in & around the visitor's centre. The said characters have to climb up structures, jump around and crash through things while displaying immense athletic and acrobatic abilities; never getting seriously injured (just saying!) -There are three Rex encounters in both films. First they destroy vehicles, then they chase a bunch of people (on Jeep and on foot). The finale also includes a T-Rex. Don't get me wrong, I still like to watch the film but not as much as the first and the third one. I love and admire JP for its depth and reverence in dealing with the subject matter. Its focused direction, beautiful cinematography, evocative music, honest character actors, gorgeous production design and a script that is almost faultless, among other things. All scenes and I mean all, feel perfect. The VC finale and the sombre helipad scene at the end are pure gold. I love JP2 for the very strong message of compassion towards animals, in a '90s summer adventure film. I like the larger than-life camera framing and the emphasis on the omniscience of nature; nature as a intimidating living force (was there in JP as well). I liked the transformation of Roland Tembo (the most interesting character in the film) and the powerful acting by Pete Postlethwaite. Loved all scenes with the baby T-Rex. Loved the very last scene with Hammond's message of peaceful coexistence. I love JP3 because it is a simple tale of broken families. The direction again is quite focused and the film never drags. Sam Neill was one of the highlights of JP1 and his charisma never fades. He's a far better leading man than Jeff Goldblum, who is great as a supporting character. Inside all the craziness of the dysfunctional Kirby family I felt a heart that was kind of absent in among the humans in JP2. The Spinosaur was both cool and a dumb meat eater. It had a great design but none of the charisma and terror as the T-Rex. The best dinosaur in JP3 (my second favourite in the series) was the avian Raptor pack. Their story was drawn as a parallel to the Kirby's story. Both were parents trying to find their lost children and were willing to go to any lengths to accomplish their goal. For the first time the Raptors were treated as animals in the series, with their own complex social behaviour. Grant did learn the most about raptors in JP3. All the scenes with the raptor were gold, especially the embryonics building scene and the final scene. It felt like Grant began to respect the animals as living beings rather than "theme park monsters," towards the end of this film. The aviary scene was tense and thrilling. Billy's sacrifice was a new heroic turn in the franchise that had not been preceded or followed by the other 3 films. I loved the subtle father-son dynamic between Grant and Billy, replacing the lovely-couple dynamic between Grant and Ellie in the first film. The music was not at par with Williams score for JP1 but was overall quite lovely at places, especially the Kirby family theme. That was quite memorable. I loved his slightly altered Williams' themes and the stirring Raptor Repartee track. It captured the panicky nature of the scene and the fierce hunting behaviour of the raptors perfectly! I get goosebumps listening to it. The Spinosaur tracks (just like the animal itself) are quite discordant on the other hand. The soft moments of peace also evoke the beauty of Williams' composition, though they sound very unique and different. The Pteranodon scenes are also scored quite well, and create all the right emotions required by the audience. Out of all the three composers, Don Davis is the most Williams-esque (other than Williams himself) and pays a good respect to Williams' classic scores as well as the smaller scattered tense motifs of JP1. My least favourite score is Jurassic World. It just isn't that thrilling or has the depth of the past scores. Also, the two cues for 'Fallen Kingdom' that were shared on Twitter from the scoring stage are both derivative and generic (like past monster movies). I hope the full score has more depth than JW1. As for Jurassic Park, I don't remember part 3 all that much and only seen the first one once, in theaters. So I'm really anxious to check them all out on UHD. But I really dislike The Lost World (curiously enough it's the only one I've seen multiple times, because of the DTS LD I owned mostly for demo material back in the day). As for JW, for me it's the worst by far. So many dumb characters and scritpt choices that it lost me completely. The worst for me is that the whole premise for the 'action' in the movie, the escape of the Indominous Rex, is one of the best examples of bad writing. I mean, am I supposed to believe that the only access to the cage of the most abominal creature ever created is to open the full door? Didn't the park designers think of a 'pet door' for maintenance personnel so they wouldn't have to open the full door and risk/allow for the creatures's escape. Sounds abusurd for a billion dollar park, that should thrive for security, specially after everything that's happened before. |

I didn't read any parts that you didn't like, so that was the only conclusion that I could gather. Regardless, I'm only kidding. You're absolutely entitled to liking the movie if you want. ![]() Hell, I enjoyed Jurassic World more than I really should have. I don't particularly get the hype over Chris Pratt. Him as Starlord, meh, him in JW/JW2, meh. |

Me too. There are some really great sequences in JP2 and there are a few very cringeworthy ones as well. I enjoyed it very much back in '97 (the city part being a notable exception) with several moments having a strong impact on me back then. Overall it's more of a guilty pleasure to me these days (unlike JP1 which has truly stood the test of time in my opinion).

Thanks! Even though I've pre-ordered the boxset I'd very much like an individual release of JP1. I hope someone besides Zoom will have a steelbook available.
