Default RIP Rear Projection TV

It appears Samsung will not produce any more RP DLP sets after the current production run of 2008 sets ends sometime in 2009. It looks like the Mitsubishi DLP sets may be the last rear projection sets manufactured. However I have not read anything about Mitsubishi's plans for 2009.

with the price of LCD and Plasma technology gone down dramatically with in the last year I can see why Samsung has decided not to produce DLP RP TV's anymore .

Front projection is where all the fun is.

Having switched from a 1080i RPTV recently, I won't be missing it.
Interesting news none the less.

I guess I'll be picking up a nice 65" DLP before they are no longer. Currently have a 50" Sammy(720) Was planning on upgrading later on but I guess I will have to move that upgrade up. Or I could skip the 65" and go ahead and set up a projector.

Dayum, an ISF calibrated RPTV will be always an exquisite treat, even with cheap LCDs, I'd pick up another RPTV anytime. But if you have a room big enough, Front projectors have always been the way to go.

Can't imagine Mitsubishi will stop making DLPs, especially with all the money they've dumped into their Laser sets. Now if Mitsubishi will start using LEDs instead of lamp bulbs...

Interesting... I looked them up but don't see any dispay devices. Their website is not so easy to navigate. Do that make display devices?

At any rate... glad you found something you like.

Then there was one—in the rear-projection business

Samsung, one of the last two manufacturers of rear-projection televisions, today confirmed that it's joining the ranks of manufacturers who have exited that dwindling market segment. The company told us that it would continue selling its remaining RPTV sets through the first half of this year but would no longer make new sets. That leaves Mitsubishi as the only company still making RPTVs—at least for now.

Sales of RPTVs have dropped sharply over the past few years as sleek flat-panel LCD and plasma TVs have gotten bigger and cheaper, pushing the bulkier sets out of the picture. In 2004, sales of RPTV sets exceeded 3.5 million units, and there were more than a dozen brands on the market. In 2008, with just two brands remaining, analysts expected U.S. sales of rear-projection sets to total about half a million units, compared to 30 million LCD TVs and 4 million plasma TVs.

I am going to jump on a nice RP DLP TV deal sometime soon. I've been eying a Samsung and with my limited budget but desire for size, it's still not a bad way to go.

Seven year ago it was three CRT tubes (probably not HD), and it was difficult to set up and keep a good picture. The new DLPs produce an excellent quality picture.
