As far as i can see every dvd release from season 4 onwards was 1: 1,78?

While i can't wait to finally getting this on blu-ray, i kind of want to watch it in the OAR first. Liked "The Wire " much more in 1.33.
(The job they did on the reframing was excellent though imo.)
I could be wrong but I think it was filmed in widescreen but put in 133 for tv. I'll be happy either way, just want to see this in HD.

Not gonna happen. So I guess you’ll just have to wait patiently.
I know it must be tough for you, but the good news is you have zero options.

I'm sort of glad it's taking awhile to get released because it's going to help me save the $ for it lol.

People seem to like telling other people how to do their job...
  • Sony said no to do a BD release of The Shield in 2009.
  • We get a BD/HD-release because of streaming service and "before Breaking Bad there was...." + test was successful.
  • Initially planned to be ready for The Shield's anniversary.
  • Because they missed the deadline, there is no hurry to release it anymore.

Be happy we are getting The Shield to begin with. The other alternative is Sony saying no cause "reasons".

I've never really gotten over the rape scene in this series.

...you know which one I'm talking about.

This is the sort of release I am willing to wait patiently. It seems that this is the last update:

As long as they are working on it, I'm fine.

The last update is the one posted on the previous page:

They are done converting all episodes and I will be looking at the final product shortly. #TheShield
Ryan tweeted that two weeks ago.

What's ridiculous about that Shawn Ryan tweet is that he doesn't even seem to understand what he's talking about, and he's the creator. Sure, they protected it for widescreen, but the shots were COMPOSED for 4:3, which makes 4:3 the OAR. It's not the size of the negative, but the composition that matters, and they SHOT IT 4:3 and only protected it for 16x9. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

While I have multiple jobs lined up to do in my line of work I do 1 job at a time to make sure I get the job done right and done at good enough time that people are not complaining that it’s taking to long to finish. If they can’t commit full time at getting these remastered done then they should allow people they trust and who can commit from start to finish to do the job.
Well, in this case, since they are cropping/altering the entire show from it's original aspect ratio, he's involved to make sure it looks as good as it can. Had they just transferred it 4:3 as it should be, then it could've/could've been done a while ago.

AND... Even on the original Fox releases, all deleted scenes in the first season were presented the 1.78 aspect ratio...

And as for having been done a while a go, you have no grasp of the time it takes to re-transfer stuff properly.

I've watched the entire show in widescreen ratio, the UK release. I had purchased the Region 1 set of the fifth season only, because of the well known editing issues regarding the final episode.

I had no idea, at the time, that the Region 1 sets were in full frame. Well, I could not bring myself to watch the set in that format: I had to repurchase it from the UK.

That's how terrible the show looks, in 1.33:1, IMO.

4k... I'm assuming they are remastering in 4k or doing a 4k Blu release?

4k will certainly be for streaming, I doubt they will be releasing 4k BDs.

@Bates
Why can't they just copy paste the framing from the DVD-release? They worked fine.

Watched the show since its premiere, and own the DVD set. This will be, without question, one of the most unnecessary Blu-ray releases in the format's history. It never looked pretty, it shouldn't look pretty, and it never will look pretty. What's next, a Blu-ray of The Larry Sanders Show?

So? That dies;t mean its correct at 1:78. It broadcast at 1.33, period. It didn't broadcast in 1.78 until later seasons. Hence, 1.33 is correct and what it was composed for. 1.78 is just a "safe area' which means dead space with no crew. But all important info had to be within the 1.33 frame, so they HAD to compose for that. It's astounding how, in 2018, people still don't understand composition when it comes to aspect ratios. Sopranos wasn't 1.78 either like the blu-ray (for the first few seasons), and it looks dead opened up with tons of dead space around characters and everyone centered. Takes any sort of creative composition away, which is a shame.

And since I work in the business and have actually transferred and scanned film, I actually DO know what it takes. I have a better grasp than many people on here, but thanks for trying.

It was shot 16mm just like Walking Dead. If you think that looks terrible on blu-ray, then ok, I guess. You just think it looks terrible because you watched bad broadcasts or marginal DVDs.

Guys guys lets not turn this into the "Beat it" video where I have to be Michael Jackson and come between the two gangs who are about ready to rumble. Let's just avoid the conflict since we are all fans of the show and everyone is looking forward to it's release on Blu-ray, regardless if its in 1080p, 4K, 10K, 29K, etc.

I doubt this will be out this year. And the longer it takes I less interest in getting this. This was supposed to be out in March.

I've spent a small fortune on BD because it was an improvement - sometimes a little, sometimes a lot - on what I watched on television and/or what I owned on DVD. I'll make my own call on "unnecessary."
