I didn't even think about the possibility of an Australian release. It claims to be a two-disc set and its only listed bonus feature is a trailer, so I'd guess there's another cut in there.
Is it worth having, though? Speaking as someone who's never seen the film at all. |

Follow-up: Videodrome, Rififi, Night of the Hunter, and Sweet Smell of Success.
Looks to me like Videodrome is identical but Arrow has better extras, and Criterion's extras for Success and Hunter blow Arrow out of the water. Rififi seems different between them but not sure which is better. |

At the risk of re-opening old wounds...
Molly Ringwald wrote a great piece about her work with Hughes, the good and bad of it and her conflicted relationship with the parts that are, from her own participant's view and wider retrospect, objectionable even while other aspects were lifelines for contemporary teens: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/pe...pretty-in-pink I think it's a great example of how you can appreciate the good in certain work without pretending the problematic isn't there. |

That's probably because she was talking to Bret Easton Ellis.

Wasn’t A Face in the Crowd rumored at one point to join the collection? I just watched it for the first time recently and was completely blown away.

I'm always interested in folks reaction to seeing this for the first time especially if all you've seen Andy in is TAGS or Matlock.

He said the role took so much out of him, he would never play another character like that again--and he never did. It's still remarkable that Lonesome Rhodes was his first film role, as he demonstrates such a command of the material. It would have been interesting to see him take on darker, more challenging roles throughout the rest of his career.

Whether you agree with her point of view, it sounds like she put a lot of thought into it. Maybe on that Podcast she didn't want to say anything off the cuff that she hadn't fully considered?

No, she smeared a dead person who is the only reason why she had a career and who is no longer around to defend himself against her dumb attacks claiming he was sexist, racist, homophobe, etc. His movies (and those from the pre-PC era) are only "problematic" because the notion of political correctness didn't exist then. I really wish John was still around so he could unload on her for criticizing his movies because they didn't conform to political correctness. Her article is dumb clickbait that capitalizes on her only claim to fame (starring in a few of John's movies).

Right, just like slavery was okay just because civil rights hadn't been invented yet.

It really is an amazing film and performance, especially given how strongly its message still resonates today. And funny to think that Griffith was playing that role at the same time he was playing Private Stockdale in No Time for Sergeants. The man really was talented. |
