I also loved cop shows, like The Sweeney and The Professionals. I used to enjoy Minder too, although this was around in the 80's so I was in my early teens when I began watching this. Those were the days when ITV actually made decent stuff.

Starsky & Hutch and Charlie's Angels were two of the American shows I watched too. I tried Cagney & Lacey, but never really liked that one.

I'm sure there are many others that will come to my mind in due course.

I had the VHS with the dubbed version and remember my Dad stayed up to watch it on telly with sub titles. With anime being more popular than ever I wish the BBC would take a chance and show some. Film4 are doing a great job with their frequent screenings of Ghibli movies.

I can briefly remember Jon Pertwee before Baker took over, and I think Sylvester McCoy was the last one before Doctor Who was taken off the screen for many years.

On the subject of documentaries, I also really enjoy shows like Coast or any other natural history programmes about the UK.
McCoy was my entry into Doctor Who (I was an 80's kid) so he'll always be my favourite. Just wish he had been given a few more years to play the part.

Tripods!

I wish they completed the story with a season 3, season 2 was great!

Tom Baker was my first Doctor. Still my fave even now.

It was creepy in places, I loved it. Agree with you, would have loved another series.

I mentioned Chips earlier. Can you remember that show? The two police on bikes!

Also (changing genre) Kung Fu and Monkey Magic?

Ah yes, I do remember Chips, but I can't honestly recall the other two mate - my old memory cells are fading a little.

How about those decent little thrillers like Tales Of The Unexpected, and one of my favourites, Armchair Thriller?

I loved that theme music used for Tales, and as for Armchair Thriller - what an opening sequence that had - a shadow approaching and sitting on an armchair with that creepy music playing. Brilliant!

And the thing is amazingly this was shown before the 9 pm watershed, I'm almost certain of that, and even this trailer set the tone beautifully (quality is a bit ropey but you may recall it):

No, you're right he wasn't in it for very long. I do remember McCoy, but I stopped watching Dr Who on a regular basis around the time Peter Davison took over from Tom Baker in the early 80's. I don't think I ever really warmed to Davison somehow after having watched Baker for so long.

Jon Pertwee was a good Dr Who, and although I only recall him briefly at the time he was doing the show, I do have quite a few of his DVD's, as well as Baker's.

Oh yes, wobbly sets and rubber monsters......what can possibly go wrong.

Armchair Thriller opening titles (1978) - YouTube

As I mentioned Tales Of The Unexpected earlier, I feel I must include this video featuring the opening and closing titles:

Anyone else used to watch this? I did love American action series when I was growing up.

If you ever feel like adding McCoy era DVD's to your collection I recommend the following.

Thank you for those recommendations Dragon Ranger. Remembrance Of The Daleks would definitely be of interest to me - in fact any episode with daleks in it gets my vote.

Amazing really, Baker was playing the role for nearly 7 years and McCoy only for 2 years. Jon Pertwee managed I think about 4 years.

I was obsessed with the special ‘The Five Doctors’ back in the day.

Overall, my fave bad guys were Davros and The Master.

I have to give full marks to the BBC for their Dr Who DVD's. I do have quite a number of them and they certainly put in a lot of effort into their releases. The Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker episodes, for example, have been excellent with regards to transfers considering they date back to the 1970's, and the extras are generally very good indeed.

One of my favourite Pertwee episodes (and in fact the very first I purchased) was Spearhead From Space, featuring the Autons. I have been collecting a few of his DVD's, but Baker is without doubt my favourite as I grew up with him as the Doctor.

Extras-wise, it's a shame the BBC couldn't come up with something similar for their Only Fools And Horses DVD's too.

I can’t bring myself to buy Only Fools as I have seen each episode 500 times!
