New question: we know HDMI brand doesn't really matter, but what about Optical cables?

Will toslink/optical cables pass 5.1 sound? I read on a thread a while back that they only pass 2.0.

Yes, they pass 5.1. You may have read that player-decoding HD-audio and then sending it over optical will only give you 2.0 core.

they will only pass 2.0 if it is LPCM but the lesser formats like DD and dts are perfectly fine across it
