But yeah, for almost two years they have had a gorgeous 4K HDR restoration of TWOK and they haven't released it on UHD. Waiting for the next movie? -- that's just stupid. I can't see any bump in sales related to some future Trek movie with a different cast.
My ultimate hope is that they halted release of a TWOK UHD because they decided to just go back and do new scans/restorations for all the original movies, with the intention of releasing a new box set. So far, Paramount has been supporting the UHD format surprisingly well and the Mission: Impossible, Transformers and Star Trek franchises are by far their biggest assets right now. We’ve already got UHD releases of both M:I and Transformers, so... my fingers are crossed!

That thought had not occurred to me

It's a shame that for Trek I and III-X the newest video-master available is from 2009!
And not even VI is available in it's alternate cut.

To make matters worse III-VII look especially bad and are DNR'd to death.

I can only hope that they will released soon as a BD remaster or UHDs...

I suppose that's better than doing it quickly and releasing a poor product, and saying "LOOK! There's your damn release you all were whining for!" Like they did with the blu-ray releases.

Par released the Transformers UHDs to cash in on the new movie. They released the Cloverfield UHDs to cash in on the new movie (even if it did go straight to streaming ). They released the Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider UHDs to cash in on the new movie. They're releasing the Jack Ryan UHDs to cash in on the new series. They're releasing the MI UHDs to cash in on the new movie. Et cetera, et cetera...

So, IF Paramount go ahead and make the fourth nuTrek movie then there's a very good chance we'll start to see some of these classic Trek flicks on UHD physical media.

At this point in time: pretty much, unless the movie has a big anniversary coming up e.g. Saving Private Ryan is 20 so it's getting a UHD. Gladiator and Braveheart are getting 4K releases as well, but the impetus from the former is coming from Universal so Paramount are playing along. As for Braveheart, well, you've got me there

I’m still going to hold onto my tiny sliver of hope that they’ll change up their tactics with Star Trek, since the absolute soonest I can see the next movie coming out is 2020 and I just plain don’t want to wait that long. It’s been nearly ten years since the original Blu-Ray releases and the pain of that disappointment still haunts me every day...

Does anyone think that they should redo the effects on the movies?

Some of the effects are quite dated and to cut costs they re-used effects shots from one movie to another. Like the Enterprise leaving the space dock from the TMP re-used in TWOK and perhaps others. The Klingon Bird of Prey explosion re-used.

They could do what they did for the TOS blus and offer both the original effects version as well as the updated effects version.

They should also include all versions of each film, from the theatrical cut to any sort of Director's Cut or Extended Edition.

TFF really needs the most work. I'd probably redo all the effects shots. Some of those effects are just cringe worthy. I'd also complete the film to include the rock creatures.

But I don't want to see any effects redone. Cinematic history and all that...

Let's see, Star Trek was released in 2009.
Star Trek Into Darkness was released in 2013
Star Trek Beyond in 2016.

So about 3 to 4 years between each movie.

What concerns me is that we have had no news in quite a while now. I think the last thing was about Tarantino writing a story for it.
But I think when Beyond was being worked on we had news about it very soon after Darkness was released. Casting news and such within a year or two.

Two years now and no cast updates, no confirmed writers.

I think we're looking at a longer period between movies this time. More of the 4 or 5 year period.

I have no idea how they are going to even handle the Chekov character now. I just hope that they don't recast him. Just mention him in passing, perhaps he was transferred or something.

I'm trying to recall where the first Bird of Prey explosion came from. Was it TVH and then re-used in Generations.

Around 2003 or thereabouts, when Paramount was releasing its first 2-disc special edition DVDs of the films (and after they had produced the Director's Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture), William Shatner actually approached the studio about finally coughing up the money to finance a true director's cut of Star Trek V (including finishing up the incomplete VFX, and adding new/better shots, including the Rock Monsters), but they ultimately said no.

Only STV: TFF (replace ALL VFX shots).

Otherwise I'd only replace the aforementioned money saving stock shots, especially in TWOK.
I'd also digitally recomposite all VFX shots like they did with the TNG rebuild. In the episode 11001001 they recomped the 1701-D approach to Starbase 74, which was a redo of the original 1701 and Spacedock. It looks magnificent. No matte lines or garbage mattes or loss of resolution from being generations away from the original.
The effects are fine and hold up except for the old optical compositing methods used back then.
