Well, that's because of the continued usage as you state and lobbying to extend copyright.

A lot of older, obscure films that were part of closed studios or had their licenses fall off you can freely revive. Games are a big focal point of the exemptions right now, not sure how that's going to play out as they are based on continued properties (like Star Wars) but it'll be known in a few months.

Copyright will expire, new works let you hold onto a character but prior to certain dates it doesn't matter. Disney has a copyright on their version of Snow White, but I can freely go make my own Snow White as it's based on a public domain work. I just cannot infringe on their version for 98 years.

Trademarks drop every 7 years, those you renew and have to show in commerce use.

Sorry, I mistook the "Not sexist at all" comment as sarcasm.

This thread had stagnated after being renamed and reclassified. It has been very active the last two days, though, and I am glad to see it revived.

Looks like we have a newly related thread appear:

Some of you digital adherents should get over there and reassure this OP.

Someone above (can't remember who) made what I thought a very good point about providers maintaining movies on servers that they no longer sell. I suppose they could go up for sale at some point in the future. Or there could be other providers with free access to those movies (for sale and for existing owners). But I would feel a lot more comfortable owning an OOP disc then owning the digital rights to a digital movie that's no longer available for purchase.

And over time, as more movies come out and there are more and more movies to maintain on servers, it makes you wonder how secure your access will be to them in the long run, especially without having to pay for any access fees.

I asked bruceames in the Home Video Sales thread how disc and digital (electronic) sell thru did for the 1st quarter of 2018 and his reply was:

"Blu-ray finished Q1 up 5.2% and disc was down 8.7%. We won't know EST until the DEG releases its Q1 report in a few weeks (usually in early May)."

I assume that the blu-ray results include 4K UHD sales in those numbers?

Thanks for the quick reply, Bruce!

It's gotten worse since the subforum change

I'd say it has definitely gotten a little stale since the move-merge. We've lost our muchness

Yes UHD is included in the Blu-ray numbers. Last year UHD was 3.1% of disc sales and 8.4% of Blu-ray sales. But the weekly pie chart still has Blu-ray and UHD together.

Also Old Classic Movies keep upgrading to the new format, and if you're like most you'll want to watch them in the latest format.

Well most Movies are shot with 4K Digital Cameras now, except for some like Quentin Tarantino. So when they go to higher resolutions the cameras will change. All this will be stored on Studio Servers, and distributed to Cinema and Home Theater Providers at the same resolution. It seems to me the compression will come in when they put these Movies on Disc, Storage Device, or Downloads.

Must you keep quoting yourself? Reading your post once is plenty.

Thanks Steedeel, you're the only one that kind of understands me. I only quote myself because I find it easier to follow. You don't have to go back to find out what someone was talking about.

There should be no need to quote yourself as an aid to following what YOU yourself said. You said it, you should know it.

If I thought quoting you made it easier to follow your posts, I would encourage it.

No one else quotes themselves because they are well aware of what they said and they don't have any whopper tales to keep track of.

Not to mention that when he is replying to someone else's post (which was in reply to an earlier post of his), their post that he is replying to likely already has his prior one quoted. So he should be able to read that, knowing the context, before further replying. It makes NO sense that including the quote of his prior post in his new one is needed to keep track of the context of the conversation.

Plus when quoting someone's post, a little blue box with a white arrow appears next to their name. When clicking on that box, it takes you directly to their actual previous post, and you can see any quotes that they were replying to if for some reason you need to refresh yourself.

By his logic, anytime there is an ongoing back and forth, he should quote all replies that he and the other party previous made in the exchange in each and every future reply of his until that specific conversation stops.

Haven't you seen the history of this Thread, Quality is all about Bitrate and Bandwidth. With enough Bandwidth you can equal Disc Quality. For Blu-ray all you need is 40Mbps and for 4K UHD it's 128Mbps. Blu-ray average is around 20Mbps, and the highs are around 70Mbps for 4K UHD. This also includes the Sound which is in the Codec like on Disc. Combine that with the new Codec H.265 with Adaptive Streaming, and you have a lot more than convenience in Digital HD.
