That's because, lets face it, DTS-MA won the battle for supremacy by a tidy majority on blu-ray.

I think my argument isn't about branding loyalty. Jurassic Park was a premium title in the DTS space, has always been pretty much the marquee on home video. Right through to now DTS:X. Why change? The legacy factor.

I'm just ignoring that guy harping on about how they're all just codecs or marketing. As... no shit

Because the output was identical but encoding was easier and faster - and that equals saving $$$.

Ask Joe average what sound format it was in and you're not going to get an answer (except maybe a "ummm, Dolby?"). Not to mention DTS Theatrical basically no longer exists. There's no legacy.

In this case though there is a clear and definitive performance difference between Atmos and X, with X being an inferior option.

When I do UHD BD mkv remuxes from my discs I always convert Dolby TrueHD or Dolby Atmos tracks (keeping the original on the remux) to DTS-HD Master Audio. Even whith a mid range laptop the process is easy and the encoding very very fast, on a Toshiba Satellite laptop with an AMD A10 CPU with 16 Gigs. of RAM it takes around 45/50 minutes to encode a two hours movie.
I also think DTS-HD MA is a more eficient codec than Dolby TrueHD, which by the way it's not the actual name of the codec and neither was developed with Blu ray in mind.
When the standards were to be set for DVD-Audio,Dolby presented his codec, which wasn't developed by them, it was a Meridian development, hence the name Meridian Lossless Packing, and so did DTS. DTS and his more eficient codec lost against Dolby, so they saved their codec for another moment and product, and that moment came almost 10 years later with Blu ray. DTS-HD MA is the codec they presented as a standard for DVD-Audio, and the same with Dolby. Dolby TrueHD is actually a Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP) stream plus a plain Dolby Digital (AC-3) stream to keep compatibility with older receivers and T.V. sets.

I said on home video. Very specifically. So you're just talking past me there, fella; bringing up theatrical WRT refuting legacy

And who cares if X is technically inferior? It's still a superior technology over the blu-ray (hence, upgrade) with it being immersive. No matter what configuration most people will rightly concede the mixing is still paramount to getting a reference/demo track. When hasn't Jurassic Park delivered this? Exactly.

Waste of time.

None of DTS' codecs were developed at DTS. DTS Theatrical is the APT-X codec, DTS home is the Coherent Acoustics codec which they bought. DTS:X isn't theirs either - the core tech in that was done at SRS Labs which they bought when they had nothing to compete with Atmos.

It's not more efficient. It's at least a megabit larger in size and requires serious DSP horsepower to decode. Why do you think so many devices, especially streaming devices and TVs - do not support DTS and if they do don't support DTS-MA?
TrueHD is a modified MLP technology, and Atmos object technology was developed in house.
Dolby AC-4 was picked for ATSC 3.0 in North America and is the latest in-house codec. DTS tried to compete and withdrew - AC-4's tiny bitrates could not be beaten.

The term “newly remastered” is so intentionally vague. Also, is that “6-part documentary” new or was it previously released? I never got around to picking up this series on BD.

Universal rarely go into details. "Newly remastered from original high-resolution film elements" is about as extensive as it's ever gotten, save for a few interwebs articles about the restoration of Jaws six years ago.

There was a 6 part doc on the Blu-ray release, so I'd have to assume it's the same

I really don't trust universal sometimes with there new masters. Cause some of there 4K UHDs are worse then the 1080p.. in terms of details.

But sometimes they do really good.. Like The Mummy 1 and 2 for example.. UHDs are big upgrades.

I really hope JP1 is not DNR raped and looks gorgeous.. that movie deserves it so bad.. The rest i can live with decent transfers.
