Why is it surprising? It is all about contracts, deals and ultimately for this.

If they do a good job of mixing the sound, it shouldn't matter which codec they use. Any difference that you may think you hear is because of the mix and not the codec.

Yea i know that, but i wasn't talking about which sounds better, i was wordering why they were using the codecs back and forth.

The studios don't pay licensing fees. I believe it is the player manufacturer.

I believe Disney is trying to save space on the disc by using TrueHD and DTS HD MA. More recently they have switched to DTS HD MA after dabbling with TrueHD. Rounders could be a movie previously prepared for release as part of this dabbling.

No, you absolutely pay licensing fees to use the encoder and display the logo on your packaging.

Yep. They definitely pay licensing fees. And while they may get a deal on them if they sign some sort of exclusivity agreement, I highly doubt Dolby or DTS would say use only us or use nothing. They sure didn't seem to with DVD anyway - plenty of releases had both Dolby and DTS codecs on the same disc.

For now, I'd tend to agree with matthewrounds. They probably have switched to DTS but still had a few releases in the pipeline using Dolby.

Another possibility is that Dolby is a bit cheaper and lower profile releases are getting that to cut some costs.
