If you ever say, "Uh, there's nothing funny about ____", know that I would never hang out with you... Because you are wrong.
You should be smart enough to accept that things are tragic and awful and still have a sense of humor about them. It doesn’t make you a bad person, despite what some dumb comment like yours may say. “Oh, there’s nothing funny about ____.” Uhhhh, yes there is if you write a good joke. There’s funny things about everything. . Last edited by eiknarf; 04-29-2018 at 04:01 PM. |

Depression is difficult to tackle and requires a multifaceted approach; medication in conjunction with therapy, in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle...The only controversy here comes from anyone trying to tout one approach over all or discount others. Now that the truth has been stated in plain English, back to the movie.

It's NOT "so basic." The Overlook sees Jack as a man with many weaknesses, and it preys on every one - his alcoholism, his ambition to be a great writer, his resentment of his family, his abusive childhood, his insecurity as a father/husband, etc. For example, there's a great, unsettling passage where the voice of Jack's dead father comes through on the radio, goading him to kill his family "because they'll always be conspiring against you." Not everything in the book is reduced to "alcohol made him do it" the way you think. I think your intense hatred of the book and King is the thing that's weird. It's okay to not like the book, but you're making blanket statements about the book that are just plain incorrect. And I'm not dumping on Kubrick. I love the movie, but I know it has flaws. Just as the book has flaws. |

My mistake. Too often I let myself get sucked into these things.
Anyway, I found this interview with Diane Johnson, who talks about working with Kubrick and what was discarded from her script of The Shining. Can't remember if I posted this before: http://scrapsfromtheloft.com/2018/01...diane-johnson/ |

Simple logic will also tell you that enough of anything that makes a person more into a zombie (less feeling, emotionally and physically) like marijuana does, for example, will lessen behavioral and physical effects. It's faulty logic to then assume that because that is the case that that must be a reasonable treatment for something short of end of life care, and in this case something that has never been reasonably defined as a medical condition in and of itself. To do that to someone is lobotomy logic, which is interesting because taking anti-depressants is similar to a chemical lobotomy. No, I don't think you have an interest in taking that red pill and learning the truth. You just want to believe whatever it is you want to believe. That's a big problem with society today. As for Stephen King, he is a big boy who can take care of himself. |

I believe a movie should always be shown as it was in the theater. I don't like any revisionism, especially when it comes to image quality such as incorrect color and contrast, even if the director himself is doing it. The Exorcist director, who's name escapes me right now, did that with the French Connection with his new pastel color palette. Idiotic and disrespectful to fans of the film.

I see the arguments for both. The US fills in some gaps and gives you a few more scenes to make it feel more long/isolated.
Euro cut is more tightly paced, leaves you with a few things to figure out on your own, and removes the hacky skeleton shot. You can't go wrong either way. |

I agree the skeleton scene is what drags down that version for me more than anything. |

I'm with you on this; the European version is my preferred cut of the movie (I believe it was kubrick's too? Though I could be wrong). It just feels like it has a better sense of pace and rhythm; the US cut is a tiny bit too laboured for my liking. Still least fans can easily watch either version so we should all be happy about that.
