Default Need anime bluray recommendations

I'm looking to expand my current library of anime blurays and I need some advice. My player is region A so anything from the US and Japan is OK.

In case of US releases, I'm only interested in releases that allow me to view the original (meaning no cutting, original JPN soundtrack and ability to turn the English subs off).

So far I have Paprika and Tekkon Kinkreet.

I'm looking into possible purchases of the Freedom box, Ghost in the Shell movies, Top o nerae (Gunbuster/Diebuster), DBZ movies, etc.

All suggestions and feedback on quality would be greatly appreciated!

the DBZ ones the Japanese language track is in Mono audio but they do have an option where you can listen to the english language track with original Japanese music in 5.1 Dolby TrueHD. Akira is coming soon to Blu-ray in Japan and America. Samurai 7 is coming soon in America from Funimation and its the complete series. I know Funimation has a main menu section that allows you to choose what language you want to listen to and choose if you want subtitles or not

I've been holding off on the Gunbuster Diebuster box set because I have no idea what it is. Is it any good? What other shows is it comparable to? I've picked up very few anime on Blu because I hate importing, and the ones they are releasing are completely new to me.

While not 'technically' anime, check out Gotham Knight. You get a good varietly of art styles. One of the segments is even done by the team responsible for Tekkon Kinkreet. Not sure about a Japanese audio track on this one though. (The English audio is well done though, since it's not an unorignal dub).

The Robotech Movies (Shadow Chronicles?) Is supposed to be nice too. I havent watched my copy yet, but some screen grabs I saw were gorgeous.

After Samurai 7, Funimation has another series due on March 9th: Shigurui: Death Frenzy. Havent seen the title myself yet, but it looks to be nice quality, so I bet it tansfers well.

I see mention of the Freedom box set. What the heck is it? I have the opportunity to get it used for like $50, should I pick it up?

I'm not really too picky when it comes to Anime, as long as it's well drawn (Like Cowboy bebop, Evangelion, Kiddy Grade, etc...)

Can't wait for Samurai 7 to come to Blu. Shame they keep pushing it back.

Gunbuster is an AMAZING show. It is concidered a classic of Gainax. I never saw Diebuster so I can't comment on that on. Also you can pick up the Patlabor movies as well. The second Patlabor movie is by far my favorite in Anime and better than a lot of live action with the story. Its slow paced and lots of dialoge (Mamuro Ooshi was the director so it kind of a given it would be like that) Im not sure if they have been released state side but the Japanese release includes english subs and a dub as well. I think the dub is actually a new dub over the VHS that Manga Video put out originally. It is actually really good but for the purist you can always go with the orginal Japanese.

Yeah, I just saw that on the BestBuy website for $99, but I'm not too familiar with that title, so I don't know if it's worth a buy.

I'm a pretty big anime dork but the bluray releases have been pretty slim so far on the domestic side. There are some must-own imports if that's your thing.

Here is a quick list!

Must:
Akira (Feb 24th)
Animatrix
Appleseed: Ex Machina
Batman Gotham Knights
COWBOY BEBOP ~ Knockin' on heaven's door *
Escaflowne Movie *
Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. Trilogy Box *
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (out today!)
Lupin the 3rd -- The Castle of Cagliostro (one of the greatest movies ever made)*
Superior Ultraman 8 Brothers (Daikessen! Chô urutora 8 kyôdai) (Jan 23rd - live action but awesome!)*

* = import title

So-so domestic releases:

Afro Samurai
Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles
Samurai 7 (Feb 24th)
Vexille

My wish would be Death Note on BD, that series is just wicked.

I will be getting Akira for sure on 02/24, it's a classic of anime.

What about Samurai 7, anyone can give me an idea on if it's worth buying?

Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise

It's a lot to pay the list price ($80.00) and I don't know why they felt the need to include a DVD copy as well.

I found a brand new copy on EBay for $29.99 and it fits all of your criteria.

The PQ is outstanding, as is the AQ. If you can find a cheap copy, it is a must title to own on BD.

I just like the CG stuff - with the exception of Akira, Howl's Moving Castle & Ghost' Shell.

Ghost In ' Shell: Innocence, Vexille, Sky Blue, Appleseed, Applseed: Ex Machina, Final Fantasy 4 & Resident Evil are all great eye candy and great sound.

If anyone is interested in Freedom, don't buy it from Best Buy. Amazon currently sells it for $81.99 but third party sellers have it for $64.99. I have this but only watched a couple episodes, the PQ is solid but it's not the latest type of animation some of you maybe accustomed to. There's a review here
http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1952/freedomboxset.html

I haven't gotten around to watching Gunbuster vs. Diebuster boxset yet, but the reviews here aren't that good pertaining the the movies itself.

One that I personally like is Vexille. Strong PQ and AQ presentation, Paul Oakenfold's music score is aggressive. Afro Samurai is also a nice title to have. The movie that I was a bit disappointed in is the Robotech release, I just didn't like the animation very much. Appleseed EX Machina is a generally title to have, but only includes lossy Dolby Digital sound while the Japanese HD DVD import gets lossless Dolby TrueHD track. Here's some photos of the boxset and screencaps
http://forums.highdefdigest.com/hd-d...pressions.html

Japan has quite a few anime releases but all are very expensive, over $50 per title.

I've seen the series. It is basically a remake of the Akira Kurosawa classic, Seven Samurai. I might pick it up at a budget price but I was fairly disappointed with it overall. It didn't have a solid flow of action or a real depth in story. I would have liked the animation to be a bit more mature.

Anime on Bluray reminds me of the early days when availability was light and the costs were high. I remember spending $40 for 30 minutes of animation on a VHS clam shell!
