I've scrolled through and it has never displayed TrueHD. Only DD EX, Neo, etc. The red DD is lit but it says DD EX when I show the listening mode. I was watching Tropic Thunder at the time as well.

Also, I'm getting speaker hiss... I have the HTiB that includes this receiver and the speaker stands come with their own tiny crap speaker wire. I used banana plugs and cut the wire to the correct length, less than 3 ft., and I'm still getting a hum through the speakers. It's also no crossing any power cables. Any ideas? The only thing I've done is used the Audessy EQ to set my speaker levels.

Just an update, I got this receiver about a week ago and am thrilled with it. Its my first real receiver. I was using a basic Sony HTIB setup before, and while I was ok with it, the difference is night and day. I got it for $319 from 6ave.com and don't think you could find a better product for the money. Watching Rambo and Live Free or Die Hard with the lossless audio is unreal. Even the Dolby Digital on normal HD broadcasts sounds much better and much more crisp.

Still tweaking some settings a bit, and I need to upgrade my speakers, but anyone debating getting this should go for it, especially if you can find it on sale.

I figured it out... The Audessy EQ had everything cbranked up to like +5db so I went and set it to where it sounded right to me, I need to just get a db meter and do it right.

How often does Onkyo updates their receivers line? Is it every year, or will it be a couple of more years before the 606 gets an upgrade-

How do I get True HD on my 606? What setting should I have my PS3 and 606 set to so I can get True HD on my Blu-ray movies? I ran Audessy but have tweaked with it. I have the 606 and the 5.1 Polk 6750. Any quick help would be much appreciated.

Im sure this has been discussed.
Your 606 will not show TrueHD on the display because the PS3 cannot bitstream TrueHD. when watching a movie press select on your ps3 remote, it should say truehd if it is available on the bluray movie.

1)have the ps3 connected via hdmi,
2)go to your audio settings and make ur audio set to "bitstream"
3)and also go to your bd/dvd audio settings and turn "DRC" off,
4) on your BR that has the True HD audio, go to settings and select it.

viola! hope i helped

its posted early on in the thread but a quick way is to put the ps3 to PCM instead of bitstream... then the 606 should show PCM and when you hit select during the movie it will show dts-hd ma or pcm/ truehd...

Does anyone have a power conditioner and NOT plug their Onkyo into it? I have heard that some receivers have built in conditioners and it is better to plug them directly into the wall. Any thoughts?

A couple of questions here for you audio guys....

Im using an Onkyo 605 A/V, Monitor 50 fronts, CS2 center, and T15 surrounds. No subwoofer at this point. I ran audessy and used the speaker calibration settings it suggested. My setup really isnt very loud until about volume 65 and up. Does this sound correct?

Also, should i have zone 2 turned on? I have no clue what the hell zone 2 does in the first place.

Should i set my front speakers to "small"??? If so how do i do that?

For some reason i keep telling myself that i did something wrong somewhere along the way...

Default What am I doing wrong? (SR606 with standalone bluray player cannot get Dolby TrueHD)

Hi,
I have read through the forum and have done what others have suggested, but it doesn't work.
My setup: Sony blu-ray player S550 connected via HDMI to Onkyo SR606; video is ok; problem is with audio.
Problem: Cannot get the 606 to decode Dolby TrueHD and "light up" TrueHD on the 606.
Settings:
1. On Sony S550, I have BD audio setting as "Direct" (to output bitstream), Audio DRC as "wide range" (cannot set it to off like in PS3), Downmix as "normal"; pressing display on sony remote shows "Audioolby Digital 3/2.1"
2. On 606, it shows Dolby Digital (with the logo), but not TrueHD.
3. The content played is "I am Legend" (cover states that it is TrueHD encoded).
What can I do to get the content to play in TrueHD with encoding being done by my receiver?
Please help!

Lightbulb I had an idea... yeah I know... an IDEA

This is a bit long, I hope someone likes it from the 606 community.

Well after reading posts all over the internet for a few days, talking about Bitstream and PCM, audio settings, best features, best sound, and wanting to make that MASTER-HD light shine on my receiver, I figured I'd run some tests of my own to see what worked best for my home theater. Below at the end of this post is a list of equipment used for this test, keep in mind, all my components are power cleaned thru a Monster Power unit, and battery backup'ed via an APC unit as well, all devices were properly grounded, all the cables used to connect the components were the same, and the tests were conducted using the optimal settings, latest firmwares, and same exact speaker setup, at the same volume level, 50, for both tests, in the same room, with the TV screen OFF, as to not be distracted for audio purposes, the room was dead quiet, and I think that about covers it as best as I could, not being a professional and all. KEEP IN MIND everyone's setup is different what sound holy crap amazing to me, could sound like total shitte to someone else soooo for that purpose I gathered a few friends who are into bluray and movies in general and have some decent setups as well.

I already owned a PS3 so I went in search of a new Sony BDP-S350. This in its self was a chore as since the holiday season, the 350 units have ALL but been sold out in my New York area. I went from 4 towns back and fourth all over for about 3 hours until I found a unit so I hope someone is actually reading this crazyness, and after the 4th hour I found 1 unit left after 12 stores, at a Walmart of all places.

This may help you make your decision on your settings and equipment or not, but I figured I'd offer an opinion. Using a few friends, 3 to be exact, plus taking into account my own opinion, I blind tested each person between the PS3 using optimal PCM settings, and the BDP-S350 using bitstream, both with the latest firmware as of tonight, both using HDMI, and all using the same Amp settings to see in their opinion what would sound better, A or B. Keep in mind I calibrated the receiver with the mic and Audiacy settings, then went thru with a measuring tape and calibrated the speaker distance over again as the mic setup never works, I also adjusted the db levels for the speakers, this will varry from room to room, and setup to setup as well. In this case the A and B selections were done at random so B may come first or A may come first the listener got to choose. A was the BDP-S350 and B was the PS3.

Using demo disks directly from DTS and DOLBY, with multiple formats, mostly DTS-HD MA, and DOLBY TRUE HD, I ran samples of audio on both machines, using the same scenes to the viewer's choice and let them tell me what sounded better to them, more clear, deeper bass, surround schemes, and so on. After all the tests were done, ALL said the BDP-S350 unit sounded better using bitstream, and in my own opinion I agreed, especially when it came to DTS 7.1 sources. Everyone also agreed that the DTS audio samples were more loud but kept their clarity.

BDP-S350 Audio Settings:
Audio Output Priority: HDMI
Audio (HDMI): Auto
BD Audio Setting: Direct
Audio ATT: Off
Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital
DTS: DTS
48kHz/96kHz PCM: 96kHz/24bit
Audio DRC: Auto
Downmix: Dolby Surround

PS3 Audio Settings:
Audio Output: HDMI
Settings: Manual
Audio Formats: Selected Everything
BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI): Linear PCM
BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital): Linear PCM
In Movie Adjustable Volume: 0

The BDP-S350 is set to the DVD input on HDMI1 into the receiver, here are my settings from my BDP-S350 with the latest firmware. Keep in mind I have my PS3 also connected to the receiver as well.

I want this receiver so bad. I'm tempted to just put it on my credit card! Oh well, good things come to those who wait.

Accessories4Less has it for $299! But shipping is $60. Might as well go with Newegg or Amazon.
