Hairspray by default only because Mamma Mia was so terrible. ABBA's music is great when ABBA sings it but none of the cast members could sing a lick and those modern jukebox musicals where they shoehorn pop tunes into some half baked plot are just terrible, a real insult to classic musicals.

Mama Mia!! I don't know when, where, why or how,but somewhere over the course of time I pretty much learned to know every lyric to an Abba song when it comes on.

MAMA MIA really is just unbelivably awful. How anyone can tolerate the grating noises of those non-singing hams is a mystery. I bought it only because my mother wanted to see it. It was absolutely painful to watch and worse to hear.

HAIRSPRAY is the much better movie.

This man is wise.

Not to mention Zac Efron actually sings and is impressive. The black guy beats him but just a little.

I like hairspray better because of nice young casts
Mamma Mia is great because of the older casts

I'm voting for Hairspray because I'm young

but both are great

Hairspray, hands down. Mamma Mia! was great, but it's no where close to Hairspray!

Haven't seen 'Hairspray' yet (though I do own it) but I have to admit that I enjoyed 'Mamma Mia' quite a bit, despite the generally awful reviews. Yes, Meryl Streep is embarrassingly miscast and Pierce Brosnan can't sing his way out of a paper bag, but somehow I enjoyed watching them (and the others) slug their way through this movie. At least they seemed to let their hair down and enjoy themselves (which was even more obvious while watching the behind-the-scenes extras). The musical numbers are fun and infectious (if you like ABBA, that is) despite the amateur singing and the oftentimes inept direction/choreography.

While I like both, 'Hairspray' has better music, better story, and is a better movie. IMO

Now, if and when 'Wicked' comes to Blu-ray, get it

BTW: Pierce Brosnan = hilarious to watch "sing"

The choice was easy for me. I liked Hairspray. And I haven't seen Mamma Mia yet, so I'll give it a rent one day when I have absolutely nothing to do.
