Quoted for truth! While I am sure Mama Mia did WAY better in the box office... it was mostly the ABBA factor that carried it through. A lot of big names in the movie but poorly cast based on voice. Had this been a completely original work and not used the work of ABBA I'm quite sure it would have been kicked, beaten, stoned and left to die. Hairspray, on the other hand, was well cast with a great deal of talent. It was definately more fun, in my eyes.. and best of all.. NO PIERCE BROSNAN SINGING! *shudders* |

"Hairspray" for sure. I like musicals in general - and started to when I saw "Chicago". "Hairspray" I fell in love with when I saw it at the movies - I knew nothing about the story, the music, the Broadway show - I just didn't - which is weird because I was/am a Broadway fan.
I like the theme of "Hairspray", the music is catchy and fun, and the movie has some meaning behind it. Plus, I think it has an excellent cast - they all play their roles well. The movie does differ slightly from the Broadway production, which was equally fun and non-stop action on stage. I got to see it a few weeks ago in NYC. When I went to see "Mama Mia" last summer at the movies, I was really excited to see it and hoping that it would capture the fun of "Hairspray" and I thought i'd LOVE it - I actually did not "LOVE" it. It's a decent movie but the singing from some of the actors wasn't that great as already mentioned. I did buy it on Blu-Ray and think the scenery looks great and I'm starting to appreciate it more. I have yet to see the actual Broadway show though. Maybe in the future. But, My vote obviously goes to "Hairspray" - I'm addicted to the music. |

HAIRSPRAY hands down!
Mamma Mia was great and had a lot of catchy songs! C'mon, you cannot go wrong with ABBA. I own it on Blu and it's so much fun to watch but it semmed like some parts could've been SO much better if they adapted the script for the screen just a bit more, which could've fit in some of my favorite songs that were deleted such as "Knowing Me, Knowing You", "Name of the Game" and "Under Attack". Hairspray on the other hand is FLAWLESS, casted PERFECTLY and all of them can really sing! Excellent choreography, Amazingly shot, Beautiful orchestraic score, it's funny and has an excellent story behind it as well! Believe me, I saw Hairspray in theatres 5 TIMES in theatres, I own the movie book and I own it on Blu and the PQ and AQ is banging! I blast "Good Morning Baltimore" like you wouldn't believe! |
