Haven't seen 'Hairspray' yet (though I do own it) but I have to admit that I enjoyed 'Mamma Mia' quite a bit, despite the generally awful reviews. Yes, Meryl Streep is embarrassingly miscast and Pierce Brosnan can't sing his way out of a paper bag, but somehow I enjoyed watching them (and the others) slug their way through this movie. At least they seemed to let their hair down and enjoy themselves (which was even more obvious while watching the behind-the-scenes extras). The musical numbers are fun and infectious (if you like ABBA, that is) despite the amateur singing and the oftentimes inept direction/choreography.

no contest here. Hairspray is watchable and fun.

Mamma Mia was garbage. I am a musical theater fan, and in my family of musical theater fans, we all just sat there jaws agape at the udder retardation of Mamma Mia

Quoted for truth!

While I am sure Mama Mia did WAY better in the box office... it was mostly the ABBA factor that carried it through. A lot of big names in the movie but poorly cast based on voice. Had this been a completely original work and not used the work of ABBA I'm quite sure it would have been kicked, beaten, stoned and left to die.

Hairspray, on the other hand, was well cast with a great deal of talent. It was definately more fun, in my eyes.. and best of all.. NO PIERCE BROSNAN SINGING! *shudders*

Hairspray for sure. Both the movie and play were better than Mama Mia's equivalents.

Hairspray outsung, outdanced and outfunned Mamma Mia! Considering the inauguration in DC this weekend, the movie is a reminder that "we've come so far, we've got so far to go."

There are two outstanding song sequences in Mamma Mia though: Dancing Queen, which REALLY opened up the movie and teased us about what could have been, and The Winner Takes It All, where Streep did a terrific job at singing the song through its depth.

The choice was easy for me. I liked Hairspray. And I haven't seen Mamma Mia yet, so I'll give it a rent one day when I have absolutely nothing to do.

This man is wise.

Not to mention Zac Efron actually sings and is impressive. The black guy beats him but just a little.

Hairspray is a pretty good movie and an excellent Blu-ray disc. Both the picture and sound are terrific.

Watched it on a plane during a flight and choose to sleep instead. Maybe I should give it another look on BD

I don't enjoy musicals but surprisingly I didn't hate either. I though hairspray was less annoying though.

"Hairspray" for sure. I like musicals in general - and started to when I saw "Chicago". "Hairspray" I fell in love with when I saw it at the movies - I knew nothing about the story, the music, the Broadway show - I just didn't - which is weird because I was/am a Broadway fan.

I like the theme of "Hairspray", the music is catchy and fun, and the movie has some meaning behind it. Plus, I think it has an excellent cast - they all play their roles well. The movie does differ slightly from the Broadway production, which was equally fun and non-stop action on stage. I got to see it a few weeks ago in NYC.

When I went to see "Mama Mia" last summer at the movies, I was really excited to see it and hoping that it would capture the fun of "Hairspray" and I thought i'd LOVE it - I actually did not "LOVE" it. It's a decent movie but the singing from some of the actors wasn't that great as already mentioned. I did buy it on Blu-Ray and think the scenery looks great and I'm starting to appreciate it more. I have yet to see the actual Broadway show though. Maybe in the future.

But, My vote obviously goes to "Hairspray" - I'm addicted to the music.

HAIRSPRAY hands down!

Mamma Mia was great and had a lot of catchy songs! C'mon, you cannot go wrong with ABBA. I own it on Blu and it's so much fun to watch but it semmed like some parts could've been SO much better if they adapted the script for the screen just a bit more, which could've fit in some of my favorite songs that were deleted such as "Knowing Me, Knowing You", "Name of the Game" and "Under Attack".

Hairspray on the other hand is FLAWLESS, casted PERFECTLY and all of them can really sing! Excellent choreography, Amazingly shot, Beautiful orchestraic score, it's funny and has an excellent story behind it as well! Believe me, I saw Hairspray in theatres 5 TIMES in theatres, I own the movie book and I own it on Blu and the PQ and AQ is banging! I blast "Good Morning Baltimore" like you wouldn't believe!

Just saw Mamma Mia! and I had really expected more after all the good buzz. Sure, it makes you feel good and had its fun parts, but I felt the production was a bit sloppy. It had no real focus in its storytelling, and most of the cast couldn't sing for shit which sort of ruined all the good songs.
Hairspray on the other hand came as a real surprise. Great music, wonderful performances both vocally and physically, and a story full of warmth and heart. I can't recommend it enough.
Now if only Warner could get Singin' in the Rain out of the door someday as well...

I also just watched Mamma Mia - and all I can say is...Why?

I loved Abba during the 70s and 80s - I don't think there's any need to apologize for good pop music. I never saw the theater production, but the movie is just awful.

Apparently the thought that the people on screen should actually be able to sing was considered non-important. In fact it seems to take it's inspiration from a drunken karoake party. This is the worst movie I've seen from 2008.

Now Hairspray was no masterpiece. I would just stick with the original movie and skip all the rest of this mess. That said, I like the movie outside of John Travolta. Every time he was in a scene, it just stopped the movie while I looked at the hideous fat suit he was in. Even with that caveat, Hairspray is recognizably a decent movie, Mamma Mia is not.
