I don't care about the color timing differences on the Laserdisc - what I do care about is the time back in early 2003 when people were dumping those discs left and right to upgrade to DVD and I walked into the local 2nd hand cd/vinyl/movies shop and found a mint copy of the Laserdisc for 7 $. Sold it that same night on eBay to some dude from Belgium for 150 $. Good times

On topic:

I've seen this movies countless times and I have no idea how it's supposed to look colorwise. I just hope for a flawless transfer from Warner. Not long to go now.

Even when a plentiful encode like SPR suffers from significant anomalies, I don't know what to expect in this case. Can be anything. Certainly helps that the film isn't 3 hours long and has 2.35 aspect ratio.

It hard not to see the continual strong green added each time. It's strong enough that it looks added, not a natural progression of existing colors.

The DVD also has some color correction not found on the laserdisc transfer. Some of the daytime scenes were photographed using a process that de-emphasizes the color blue and leaves a greenish hue. The laserdisc presents these scenes approximately the same as I remember them in the theater, but the DVD has added additional green tinting. Again, your preference for this might go either way. I’m sure that these are both minor differences and that either edition of the film will be perfectly satisfying.

There are only 2 transfers available, soon to be 3 with this 4K release. The laserdisc/original DVD (they look 100% identical contrary to what it says above) and the DVD for the UMC (Ultimate Matrix Collection boxset). The HD DVD and Blu-ray use the exact same transfer as the UMC DVD.

Mind you the original laserdisc/DVD transfer is seriously flawed because the gamma is all wrong and the all white scene in the Construct looks like this:



This is definitely not the intention of the directors. Their script reads "Neo is standing in an empty, blank-white space."

As such its colors cannot be considered accurate at all.

Then we have the statement by producer Joel Silver that the Wachowskis were always dissatisfied with that transfer because it looked "too light", and to me it definitely looks like that. There's no contrast in the Construct scene, everything is muted and grey and nothing pops. That scene should present the max contrast and pop of the whole film.

Is that a picture of a screen or is that a direct frame grab? The reason I ask is that it looks like it is a picture taken from a monitor or TV that doesn't have very good uniformity and is leaning toward red in its calibration. Plus what the script says "blank white space" doesn't mean that when they filmed it the room was a perfect nondescript white.

Here are comments DP Bill Pope and the Wachowskis made when they film was released about how it should look.

This graphic representation of the film also became an invaluable tool for director of photography Bill Pope, whose common interest in comic books had previously landed him the director of photography assignment on the Wachowskis' Bound. Pope recalls, "They had seen and loved [the 1993 horror-fantasy film] Army of Darkness, which I shot for director Sam Raimi. They called me in, and we had a terrific meeting. I think they hired me because I read comics and knew what they were talking about whenever they mentioned a particular title. In fact, during our meeting, there was a copy of Frank Miller's Sin City on their desk, so I asked, 'Is that what you want the film to look like?' We were all impressed by Miller's use of high-contrast, jet-black areas in the frame to focus the eye, and his extreme stylization of reality. I had long wanted to do something that stylized on film."

The Wachowskis are equally enthusiastic about their director of photography, stating, "Bill Pope is the kind of cinematographer who really enjoys using black on the screen. There's a certain [compositional] power in having deep, dark blacks. But beyond that, Bill also likes moving the camera, which we enjoy doing very much. Those two elements fit really well into the way we wanted to make our movie."

Good luck finding these Sin Cit-esque deep inky blacks and high contrast on the original DVD... Try looking for them.....:

That looks like a capture to me. It matches the look of the original UK DVD.

Looks like a great 4K UHD presentation from that review, but the current $32 price remains too high for me.

When the price drops to $25, or lower, I will certainly buy it.
