No new extras for the 4K discs. Again, just shows what an utterly lazy and lackadaisical effort this UHD set was, from Universal. They just wanted to milk the money as soon as possible by giving us less than what we deserve.

Do you mean no 4k extras at all? Or are there old extras on the 4k discs? Thanks for clarification

I wonder what's the general opinion of the colors in the VHS version? More accurate to the theatrical presentation or not?
I don't think they are accurate either. They'll likely be very similar to the laserdisc and the DVD, dull, lifeless pink-magenta colours.

I find it strange that people here are defending the UHD with such flat colours. But hey, different opinions!

All old extras of the 2D Blu-ray are there. That's what I heard.

Colors really pop in HDR.

People complain because JP1 is not reference disc, but this post shows the difference compared to BD is really amazing.

EE really ruined BD transfer, and there's very clear uptick in details (especially on the 2'nd comparsion, car details are wayyy sharper). BD looks like upscaled 720p to 1080p with EE on top of that, while UHD looks more like 1440p upscaled to 4K (and without EE).

I have seen 3D version on my GT60. Excessive DNR, dark and ugly brown colors

I don’t think anyone is saying it isn’t better than the BD. Of course it is; the removal of the EE alone sees to that. But an amazing upgrade? Nope, don’t agree at all. It’s a visible improvement to a problematic source. Until that source is revisited, it’s never going to look “amazing,” IMO.

Interesting, wonder if those old extras are in 4k resolution on the 4k discs? If anyone could clarify, thanks!

No, the extras are only on the included BDs.

I had that though too, or maybe that's just what the film looks like after dialing in the contrast and saturation and not adjusting too much else. Might explain why there's such a discrepancy in the colors. The 3D grade is too strong, but I would have liked something a bit more in that direction. And there are several sequences on the UHD that approach that sunburned, golden warmth. These look pretty good with a good balance to my eyes:

But then other times, particularly on exteriors, it looks like this or the first shot from my comparison, which is a bit cold and dull:

I also spotted a fair number of framing differences between them, here are two:

No one's saying it's amazing, but look:
It's not bad overall.
It's a huge upgrade over the garbage BD.
It's all we're going to get for a long time.

It's an easy recommendation then. It's definitely a mixed bag, and the DNR is a real shame, but with proper contrast, better colors and more filmic properties it often looks quite nice.

For the record I don't consider 3D conversions valid presentations of movies so I'm not taking that one into account at all.

It's almost as if Universal are afraid to release their films with natural grain for fear of too many complaints.
I always thought that TLW had the most filmic look from the BD set and it seems that its the same with this new 4k.

Yes EE alone is big upgrade and if you add to that noticeable resolution increase, HDR and better colors you end up with really big upgrade overall over very bad BD. JP1 is not reference transfer, but it looks amazing compared to BD.

Did you actually pop in the old BD and compare? It's completely unwatchable both because of the sharpening and bad contrast. I guess we'll just have to disagree but I get the feeling some people pass off anything that's not perfect as a "minor upgrade." Not sure what you mean by "problematic source."

A previous garbage edition is no excuse for a new garbage edition, but going from garbage to serviceable is an OK upgrade in my book.

4K is on a roll, it's now or never...with all that Dolby jazz.

Oh come on: The Matrix is a REAL upgrade, Saving Private Ryan is a REAL upgrade, Braveheart is a REAL upgrade. Even Die Hard is a decent upgrade

Out of all the classic titles we are getting this month, guess which of them look like a MINOR upgrade?

Jurassic Park Trilogy and Gladiator. Guess what do they have in common? Universal doing the job
