Yes, they pass 5.1. You may have read that player-decoding HD-audio and then sending it over optical will only give you 2.0 core.

they will only pass 2.0 if it is LPCM but the lesser formats like DD and dts are perfectly fine across it

EDIT: dang you beat me to it.

If you have the AVR set to pass through the audio, you will not get anything better than 2-channel stereo (which is what the TV can accept). Turn off the audio-out, and you'll get DD, DTS, etc...

In your case, it "sees" the TV, and will not send anything other than what your set can accept. Disconnect the cable to the TV, and I bet you'll get your DD back.

It's not the splitter or the cables, it's how HDMI works.
You were exactly right. I disconnected the HDMI going to the TV from the splitter, and Dolby Digital popped up on my receiver. When I plugged it back in, it went back to a 2ch matrix.

Well i have a ps3 for games and blu-ray, and sometimes i dont fell like using my receiver. so i would like to be able to switch from tv to receiver and vice versa with having to keep swicthing my cables.

We spoke about this in the other thread.

The only thing that may work is the 1.3 certified splitter from monoprice, but like my situation, the splitter "see" the TV and only send your PS3 2 channels. Its worth a try, imo.

Can you do that? Would one of the inputs actually be used as an output?

I've "heard" you can do this as there is no directionality in the signal. Folks that want to output a video signal to two different displays will use one, but you can only have one display on at a time or it won't work (again, from what I've read). Someday when I build my theater room, I'm envisioning a projector and 120" screen on one wall for movies and my plasma on another wall for everyday TV, games, etc. I'll need to be able to feed both the TV and the projector with the same signals, so they would need to go through an HDMI splitter to do this.

you would flip it around so that the buttons selected the display and not the source but I deleted that post as it was too general, it will not work with all switches and to my knowledge has to be done on a manual switch from monoprice and you have to open the unit and reverse a diode. they say you can bypass it but i don't like that, you are far safer reversing the diode. here is the post on how to do it http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=877595

It's coming back to me now. I think we read about this in the same place because the diode part sounds familiar.

HDMI is currently omni-directional. I asked this awhile back and was met with a lot of confusion. However, they are just now working on adding to the spec *groan* bi-directionality, so it'll work coming and going. Of course, this means new components and possibly new cables, but we'll see.
